That's the black bottle synthetic. I feel most here including myself are running the gray bottle VR1 dino. You had better see if you can find the specs on the ZDDP levels.

Theyre not posted on Valvoline's website like the conventional VR1 is, but someone posted the info on BobistheOilGuy. Looks like the synthetic gets the later SN rating, which has a lower zinc/phos content requirement for the lighter weights (10w30, etc). If you stick with 20w50, youre fine, as it has the same 1400/1300 ppm as the dino. The price is right, so I might give it a try. Thanks for the link! |

Good deal, I just bought a case of 6 on amazon for $12. Cheap enough, but the rebate will be ok too.

The add says 25% more Zinc 900 - 1400 ppm zinc is high zinc. I'll get a case and check it.(I'll change the oil in the wifes car)

While I was at Napa one the guys showed me another Valvoline product called Not Street Legal. He claimed it has higher ZDDP than VR1. Does anybody know anything about NSL or can check on it?

The NSL has reduced detergents, meaning it won't carry combustion byproducts in suspension for the whole 50 hrs.
I would shy away from that & stick with regular VR1. |

Today is the last day to take advantage of the free case of Synthetic VR-1.
Why is it that every time I walk into a parts store and ask for something I get the "well I ain't never heard of that" or "there is no such thing"? I consider myself a real novice at all this mechanic stuff, but every time I inquire about something to do with my engine at the auto parts store I stump the guys. Just affirmation that if you have the time you are better off learning to do everything yourself. Today I walk in and the kid asks me if he can help me find anything so I tel him VR-1 Synthetic 20W-50 so he goes right over to the conventional grey bottle and starts loading up a basket and I say "that's not the right one. It has to be synthetic" so he says "all VR-1 is synthetic". I politely disagreed and start looking at the other bottles and find the black bottle right next to conventional. So of course I have proved him wrong so he has to get back at me somehow so he says "once you use synthetic you have to stay with synthetic", and that I have to "flush the engine before I use it". What do you guys know about that? Is it a problem to switch from conventional to synthetic and then back again? Probably will not change my oil for another 6 weeks anyway. |
