Hi, have a 1983 sn.It is difficult to start,I have to keep idle at 1200rpms and then it is still not smooth. On take off it is VERY sluggish but then it takes off like a shot. Half speed and wide open run great.I've replace fuel filter. I was told the timing was 6 degrees before TDC (by a dealer). I had it right on the nose and it couldn't get out of it's own way.So while out in the lake I adjusted it by sound and feel (didn't have a light).AS I said it ran great after about 10 mph.Any advice appreciated. Thanks, Turk.

If you've exhausted all of your ignition possibilities, you may need a carb adjustment.

The holley site has some good info on adjusting. I just rebuilt mine and followed the instructions and it runs great now. I had a similar issue, it would stall under 1200, rebuild fixed it.

I concur you have some carb issues, but the avice you got regarding base timing is off. 6 degress it will certainly run like azz. 8-10 is more like it.
