I've acquired a 1956 Atom Skier, and it needs plenty of work. I purchased the boat with the intention of working on it myself. The problem is...I've never worked on a boat before, haha! We all start somewhere I guess and I would like for this to be a hobby, but I just don't know anyone who does this kind of stuff, so I'm on my own! I'm not in any hurry, and am very concious of my ignorance at this stage. That said, I'm really interested in learning, taking the time to do it right, and finishing with a restored product that I can be proud of. I'm looking for suggestions from all you experts on where to begin, what to read, etc. I appreciate any thoughts!

There are some good threads going on right now about wood boat restorations. Welcome to the site and post some pics of your project.

Alan's 55 Hurricane restoration is pretty amazing. Will give you something to read the next few days. 55 Hurricane

Seems most of the guys that do old boats reference this guy

My first recommendation is to take the boat down to the frame. CC used a linseed oil and talc based bedding compound between all their joints and it will be dried out. The only thing holding the boat together now will be the screws.
Don's book is great and I suggest getting it even though it's more on planked boats. Click on the 54 Atom link below and it will take you to my diary. Pictures!!! We need them!! Also, a first name if care to. You'll find that most on CCfan use them instead of screen names. |
