97' Sport Nautique Steering Cable

Hello CCF Community,

I Hope everyone has been enjoying their Nautique as much as possible this summer, sadly I have not. I still have to replace the steering cable on my 1997 Sport Nautique due to the fact that my boat's stiff-steering has finally gotten to the point of ABSOLUTELY needing replacement. Since I don't want to pay the incredibly high labor cost for my Nautique dealer to replace the cable, I am ordering the part myself and having a trusted mechanic-neighbor on the lake complete the task. Unfortunately, after paying my dealer top-dollar to tune the boat up for summer, they have declined to give me the part number/information for the correct steering cable.

Can anyone advise on what steering cable I'll need to order? Or, what I can do to determine the right part?

Where in Michigan are you ?   The dealership won't give you the part Number ?

Eric, the length isnt critical. The throw is- but Im not sure if the CC R&P cables are anything special. I suspect not if you can get it right from Teleflex.

Lewy's link is absolutely correct- but you may want to wait for Jody to chime in. There are certain year R&P systems that arent as good as others- and its only marginally more expensive to get the full kit (including the rack) rather than just the cable itself. The cables themselves are cheaper, so you save money in the long run- and end up with a better system to boot. Actually, you may just want to call him- Im sure he can source the parts:

The rotary cables offered from 82+ are definitely special (longer throw) for CC. Im just not sure about the R&P's that came after that.

Do you have a link to the cable and helm you installed in your 93?

We have been selling that same Extreme cable for $165.00, back mount kit for $65.00. we have also been utilizing the 21' cable as it then routs cleaner and alows for no binds what so ever.

Jody, I emailed you through the site before I bought the cable/helm but never got a response, I had to get it here so I just ordered it from DIM. I knew you had a good price on these... should have looked harder for your phone number!

How does the 21' cable route cleaner? wouldn't it be too long?

It seems like the cheapest option is the teleflex replacement for $190, am I right or am I missing something?

Also what would the advantage be of replacing the cable with the extreme cable ($165) and back mount ($65) for $230 from FL Inboards?

Ours went out today ('96 Sport) on our maiden White Lake voyage. Got a tow from another CC back to the ramp, loaded her up and took her across the street to Tommy. This past weekend, I noticed the steering was getting tight, especially when turning to the right. Looking forward to smoother steering.

Harddock, might be some worn gear teeth under the helm that manipulates the steering cable. That's what broke on ours today, along w/the cable.
