No timing bracket on my 318 Chrysler

I now have the 318 Chrysler back in my 1969 Barracuda. So I thought I'd spend the afternoon in the lake with it. Wrong.

No spark.

Replaced dizzy cap, rotor, coil resistor, coil, points and condenser. Hit four auto parts stores to find the above, and made 3 more trips to Advance on top of that.

Finally got a spark after we replaced the condenser and re-set the points. Then I went to check the timing and discovered there's no bracket or timing mark on the engine block. There is a mark on the damper. Evidently some evil person took the bracket off, or never put it on.

Can anyone suggest a method for setting the timing without a mark?

I did get the motor to fire and run, though. It ran last summer and I haven't made any significant changes to the motor since then, so I assume the timing it OK. But I did move the points significantly, so I should check the timing. Just don't know how.

P.S.: Incidentally, on the way to one of the parts stores this morning I came up behind a beige Correct Craft with 2 white lower side stripes just like mine, registration #VA 7154 AZ. I'm sure it was heading to the same lake (Claytor Lake in Virginia) that I was headed to. That anyone on this site?

Thomas. I have seen in posts on this site that on some marine conversions the timing is set by viewing in a window at the bell housing. You may want to look for such a window.

Your right that timing marked is accessed thru a hole at the top of the bell housing. It might have a rubber plug in it. Remove the plug set the timing as always, reinstall the plug. Thats it!

It's not a rubber plug, but there is a metal plug at the top of the bellhousing that's about an inch in diameter. Now if I can just find the timing mark on the gear…

The timing mark is not on the gear it is on the flywheel. On the rear side of the flywheel(the side the torsion coupling is bolted to) you should find at one or two marks(very thin lines), one may be white & one red. Rotate the engine by hand to locate them. I believe the white mark is base timing. Let us know if you can't find them.
