The wood on my observer seat on my '87 SN is starting crumble. I would like to just rebuild the wood and then put the seat cover back on it. the vinyl is in good shape. Can anyone tell what type of plywood this is made out of? I dont think this is marine grade ply. I would be happy just rebuilding it with the same material as the factory used, since it has lasted this long.

Per some guidance from folks around here, I used exterior plywood with a couple coats of epoxy resin over it when I did mine.

Larry above is correct. Just go with exterior ply. It's the exact same wood and glue used for "marine" The only differences are Marine, since it's used for structural components, has a tighter spec on internal ply (veneer) voids and the cost is way out there!!! Yes, several coats of CPES and a coat of epoxy resin is a great idea. I need to welcome you to CCfan as well. How about some pictures and a diary entry too? |

Thanks Larry and Pete. Not my first boat, but my first nautique. This boat has been kept up pretty well, but there are a few things that need to be done/replaced. The CPES that you mentioned... you mean "Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer"? I found this on rotdoctor.com. Any other place to get this that you know of?
The staples that hold the set covers on are rusted really bad. I think the seat has been recovered. Did the factory use stainless staples? I would hate to redo the seat and then the staples rust out again in a couple yrs. Are stainless staples available? I hate rust! I'll post some pics when I start this project. One thing that I have already completed is my trailer lights. I've already converted all my trailer lights to LED. Since non of them worked when I got the boat, thought I would do that before I got a ticket. Thanks |

CC factory using SS staples???
 They are just too expensive!!!
The type of trailer lights you use is not the problem. The way they are wired is. Ground wire to each light (don't rely on the steel frame of the trailer. Solder and heat shrink tape EVERY connection. Run your wiring in some kind of protection - I use PVC pipe. |
