I have had a vibration under acceleration and just had the prop rebuilt and i have diagnosed the strut is bent to the right pretty badly.

I am about to order one from white lake marine, just wondering how hard it would be for me to change it myself.

is it as easy as pulling the prop off, removing strut, put new strut on, seal it and align it then put prop on?

i have searched but found alot on replacing the strut bearing but not on changing the whole strut.

Have you taken a look at the alignment video? it may give you some pointers.

BTW, struts can be straightened. Most prop shops can do it for you and you could save a few bucks!! Some here have even done it themselves. Chris (SN obsessed) comes to mind.

just watched the alignment video right now, some of it seems a little vague, but i probably need to watch it again, i have a v drive so it will be harder,

yea i called a shop in austin to see if he had bend the strut back but was not successful, i think nettle props in austin should be able to do it,

i will try to take a picture it looks pretty bad though,
if i did it myself i was thinking of heating it up and pounding on it.

The tech session ran a little over 20 minutes but Kieth had to chop the video down to 15 minutes to get it on youtube so there may be a few gray areas. Just ask if any clarification is needed. There is no difference between a DD or a VD. All the alignment principles apply to both.

How about lightening up your pictures. I can't see the strut!! Resizing them to the sites screen size helps too. It then doesn't require scrolling from side to side trying to look for something.

Now you have the zoom too high, Take it back to 50% and you can see that last picture pretty well. He's got it bent pretty good,I'd just send it in

I think that strut could be salvaged. It takes a press or a fixture with bottle jacks. Don't just pound on it with a hammer, that wouldn't work.

sorry i thought i resized them small enough,

SNobsessed, what kind of shop would have the sort of press you recommend or bottle jacks, because my first thought was to heat it up really hot and hit it with a wooden mallet

Here on this computer at work, I can make out the strut Yup, it's bent!!

I do feel it's worth getting it straightened and yes, try a prop show. If that doesn't work, call around to metal fab and machine shops. They will need an arbor press and of course metal bending skills!

Send it up to Nettles in Austin, if they can't do it at least they would be able to get you another one. It would save you from haveing to go to two places. You want to check the drive shaft out as well, it would really suck to have to take everything apart twice.

Nettles seems to have prices equal to the lowest I could find for my prop, the only thing is since your in TX you get to pay sales tax.   They're easy to get to off of 35 if you wanted to save the shipping.

got the strut off, now before i take the shaft off can i check it for staightness with a dial indicator or should i just take it with me to the prop shop

Probably should have checked it first, but I'm not positive since the strut is bent. Now you'll have to take it off to check it.

Yes, You should have dial indicated with the strut on by clamping the indicator off to the strut. That is in the video. It's not too late you get the strut back on the hull and tightened down with a couple bolts. You want to check forward and aft (on the prop taper). You should not see anything over .003".

If you have already removed the shaft, a prop shop may not be equipped to do it. Typically a machine shop will have a set of V blocks and a granite surface plate. That really is the best way.

Might be worth a call, depending on where your at, but I'm 95% sure that Nettles can straighten shafts which would mean they have something to measure them with if its out and your taking it there   This of course depends on where your taking it and how far along in the disassembly you are. Hopefully your taking a break from the heat (105 here) and can do what Pete is suggesting.

i cant find a dial indicator here in new braunfels but there is a habor tools in austin but i just got back from a cnc machine shop and he can check the shaft there
