The previous owner painted the original red stripe on my boat black. I'm interested in sanding off the black paint to get the original red stripe back, which I know is a risk due to not knowing the condition of what its like underneath. Anyways my question is are the stripes on these boats painted on or are they colored gelcoat? Because if they were painted on I would be worried about sanding through the red paint as well.

Max,
85 was the first year of gel coat stripes. Your 84 model would have been painted. I have heard that Rustoleum is the paint of choice for the earlier boats' stripes, but not sure if that was also the case for the later painted boats. I think you'll need to re-paint to achieve a decent result. |

Max,
I agree with Dreaming. you mention original red. 84 would have had the 3 stripe. How about a few pics? |
