One of the (many) winter projects is to put in a dual battery system in my 1986 Martinique.
I want a system that isolates the starter battery from the accessories; however I want to be able to link them in parallel if needed to start the boat. I will probably have different capacity batteries of different age.
The obvious way is an isolator switch, however does this charge the connected batteries at ‘one’ unit and over charge the charged battery till the ‘low’ battery is charged. I have read about voltage sensitive relay and many other ‘gadgets that work.
Can anybody recommend how to do this properly and recommend components.

Thanks
Tom

Tom,

Here is a link to a thread I did when I set up my dual battery system with the Hellroaring isolator/combiner. forget using relays, too much voltage drop, and you would need to have matching batteries. The isolator combiner doesn't need matching batteries, has almost no voltage drop, and If you need to combine batteries in an emergency, you flip a switch under the helm. I have had this set up now for almost 4 years with no trouble and never had a case where I could not start the boat.
