On my "88" SN-2001, when I go to put it in gear I have to do a quick rev-up with the throtle then back to almost neutral before it will shift. In other words the RPM's have to be up kinda high before it will shift but once it's in gear there's not a problem. Is there something that needs to be adjusted to correct this? Thanks

What is your current idle RPM?

You can turn up the idle RPM but if your idle RPM is already correct then just turning the idle rpm up without fixing the other problem will just lead to excess wear on your tranny.

Between 6-700 RPM's. I have to rev it real quick to around 1000 then pull back real quick so it doesn't "hit" hard when it goes in gear. If that helps you.

It sounds like your shift and throttle cables need adjusting. There are a couple of real good threads on how to do it. Have you tried any adjusting?

Tried the search, didn't come up with anything. Searched: shift cable adjustment, adjusting shift cable, adjusting transmission cable, transmission cable adjustment, cable adjustment. If you have a specific thread I would be happy to read it. Thanks

Disconnect your cable at the tranny and try it manually. If it works that way, you only need to adjust the cable.

Here's the link to a thread from a few years back and how to "rig" your throttle cable.

I agree with the above. I'd also check your tranny fluid level too.

I don't know much about transmissions, but these are ultimately shifted hydraulically, right? Is the tranny pump powered by the engine, whether or not it is in gear? It's almost like he's having to get fluid moving before it will do anything.

Reminds me of a car engine that's low on coolant, and you have to rev it a bit to get enough moving to get heat.

Brian,
Take some time when you get a chance and look at the Velvet drive manual in the ref section. I feel you will get a better understanding on how theses things really work.
