All, (and mainly Eric)

I just purchased a 40 foot Kingscraft hosueboat with twin Paragon PV33 v-drives. I have pulled the drain plugs on the drive and drained the water out, but what more needs to be done to properly winterize them?

I know this isn't really related to your forum, but I appreciate the help.

Welcome, we will have you in a correct craft in no time. It looks like you have lurked enough to know that Eric is the man for transmissions. I would be surprised if he has not found this by 630 tomorrow morning.
For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

7:30, as you know i did work for Paragon for 10 years, I assume they are the water cooled jackets with the water hoses going into the rear sections? seen many of those blow aprt from winterizing,
i really would make sure all the corrosion and water is out of them and then anti-freeze them, the front section will be cooled by a trans cooler and should be drained also,
normally i get em hot, drain all the water on the engine and the trans and then pull antifreeze thru the water intake hose on the suction side of the pump

Sorry for the lack of reply. The boat is currently 4 hours from me, so I didn't have much of an update to offer. Below is a picture of a transmission that looks almost exactly like mine.

It looks like the Top left hose (When looking towards the rear of the boat) goes to a heat exchanger on the engine. I haven't traced the right hose back. I did fire up the engine and run antifreeze through the system. When I pulled the plugs on the PV33, I did get antifreeze out of them.

Also, the port side PV33 seems to be leaking fluid. Do you know of anywhere that would sell gasket kits for the older Vdrives?

great lakes power 440-951-5111 parts
its very important to pull the bottem plug on the v-drive section and clear the contamination that settles at the bottem so you get all the water out, it should be a 1/4 npt plug
good box, but always keep an eye on e-bay for a spare, most of those parts are obsolete, you can call me sometime if you are worried. 330-273-8291

is the Vdrive unit much different than a Walters? I found one locally, was installed on a Chris Craft engine. The guy has no idea what it's worth (down here)

Eric,

I need to pick your brain. The former owner told me that the port side transmission tends to leak fluid. After talking with him some more, he said "Some of the fluid will transition from the transmission to the vdrive. It appears to be leaking between them.".

I know it is still very little info, but if what he states is true, do you believe that it could be due to needing a gasket/seal replaced?

Spring needs to hurry up!

I am located in Wheeling, WV. I couldn't find the PM tool on the board to send one to you, but what would you recommend for the transmission? If I am going to get that seal replaced, should I go ahead and get the entire thing pulled and all the seals and gaskets replaced? Does the whol Vdrive need removed and lifted out? What would be a good price I would be looking at to get this work done?

If you're ever over my way, I will take you out for a spin. Here is a link to some pictures of the boat.

Eric,

I finally got the boat to Wheeling. I will be calling you with some questions in the near future. I have to get some things sorted on my end. When getting the boat pulled I broke a rudder. So I have a short list of things that I need to take care of.
