Why is it recommended to change motor oil while winterizing? I don't know but it seems to me it would make sense to change oil in the spring when its time to go boating. Just curious.

It is not recommened to let the old oil with all of its comtaminates to
set in the oil pan all winter. Clean oil will not create sediment. |

I am not an expert but have been told contaminated oil can become corrosive also.

For thousands of years men have felt the irresistible urge to go to sea, and many of them died. Things got better after they invented boats.

I have seen main and rod bearings that look like "swiss cheese" from old oil and it's high acid content. This was an old engine that had been sitting with the old oil for a couple of years. "Not given" (golfman) your "sense" is off! Time on the engine will make a difference. I have stored some of my very low hour boats over winter without and oil/filter change but I'm talking less than 10 hours of run time.

Blow by - The PCV valve scavenges out the crank case but a little or a lot of the blow by is obsorbed by the oil in the pan and its "acidic"
and the Total Acid No. goes up 1.0 is high. Like Pete said the acid in the old oil attacks the soft metals. (bearings) |
