Mark, what kind of boat and how big? I consider the Volvo Duo-prop to be a good drive. They are very popular on a lot of boats. Have never owned one though.

1994 20' Regal bowrider - sold my 73 Nova because it wasn't too practical with the 3 kids and got the bowrider - had to have something we could get 8-10 people in b/c the kids want to take friends to the lake and you have seen us a family of 5 plenty of times loaded up with no room in the Mustang. It is in great condition as far as I am concerned and I had everything checked before purchase by a friend that works at Port Royale on Lanier. I was just curious about the outdrive I have read more good than bad on the duo prop and the 290 series is supposed to be heavy duty compared to a Mercruiser "Alpha". Looking forward to May 2012 to get back on the water.

I have a funny feeling you will be hitting the water with that new boat before May!

The last time I drove a 4.3 was back in '88-'89. It was a Dynasty boat with an OMC Cobra 4.3, four barrel carb, rated at 205 HP (if I remeber correctly). The boat topped out at 49 mph on the speedo. It was an 18' Cuddy cabin and it was just me and Robin. Pretty sure that Volvo Duo-prop will do a nice job for you. You will like the 20' for the room. It will beat you and the Mustang across Lanier in the rough water!

just dont break it, the first tune-up on a Ferrari is about 30 grand,
i was working on an 86, with a 290 volvo, not duo, but the housing on the back of the engine was shot, it was a bearing a shaft and a housing....started to call around, FCK!!!! 3500.00, the boat was only worth 1800.00, luckily i found a brand new take-off for 500.00.
just forewarning you, they are very expensive to repair

Jim we have had it out a few times cruising it was a little chilly to do any watersports, but it gets in he mid 40's no problem on the speedo I didn't have a GPS on me any of the times I was on the water to verify. The duo-prop has a great hole shot it doesn't really have any bow rise it feels like it just noses slightly and then it is flat on the water. The original manual says it was the higher HP model which is rated at 225hp in lieu of the 195. I know we will have fun on it - probably make this the weekend boat and the Mustang the weekday evening boat jus tto go do some quick skiing.

Eric thanks I received the same input on the outer housing components - internals I heard were on par with Mercruiser for replacement cost
