Fuel guage not working

The fuel guage on my 2004 SV211 is not working.

It is just reading empty.

Where do I start looking for the issue? I've never had to diagnose something like this. Is there a way to just test the sender directly? Or test the guage separately?

I just filled the tank and it shows empty. Boat had sat in storage for a year before I purchased it.

Where should I start?

I would check the grounds and connections at the guage . Pete would probably say somthing like ohm it out. Then check the connections at the tank. could be your sending unit, wires, or guage. Not much help, I usually just start ordering parts.

Guage is probably not the culprit, more likely connections or sending unit

these are not like old school gauges,gotta love technology.does it light up?gauges on these boats are wired crazy.the sender is basic and can be ohm checked at the sender,then it runs thru a module,then the dash.gauges are wired in series going from gauge to gauge.i had same problem on my 05'.there is vy little helpful diag on the new stuff.in the end i replaced the gauge for $90 and all has been good for a couple years.my gauge did not move and did not light up.the fuel gauge is in the middle of the series and my gauges before and after worked properly and thats why i went with a gauge.i did verify my sender was working properly with a standard ohm ck but i dont remember the spec.

I tested the guage. It doesn't light up at all. If I disconnect either of the connectors, the rest of the guages go dead. But when I plug them back in, they work again. So it seems like the guage.

Is there anything else to check? Like a bulb?

Or does anybody know the specs of the fuel sender so I can check that before I drop $90 on a guage?

I remember that the digital guage showed the HrL which is supposed to be Hours Left. Does that use the fuel sender, which would confirm that the sender is working (I think).

The "old school" and "new school" has got me!! The sender is still a resistance device but to check it, it really neeeds to come out of the tank. At this point, just make sure the ground to the tank/sender is good. Clean up all the connections and use dielectric grease when reconnecting,

pete,old school refering to the sender is correct.it is still the same float stlye using resistance to change reading.where it changes is the sender signal now runs thru a control module mounted on the transom in the ski locker[on my 05' 196].from the module on gets complicated.if the gauges fore and aft the fuel gauge work and light up i suspect the gauge as that was it on my 05'.pete,you are the one that helped me with the resistance ck on the sender a couple years ago.it was my first post here and i have been addicted since,thanks for all your input.

So is the gauge not lighting up AND not indicating fuel level?

The reason your other gauges went dead when disconnecting the post (at least if that part is like the old boats) is that hot and ground are run in series. So, even if your fuel gauge was dead, at least it was passing the current along when it was connected.

UPDATE: It works!!

Thanks to all the tips, but basically, removing the connectors, cleaning, and resetting seemed to do the trick. When I re-installed the batteries tonight, the guage lights up and shows FULL.

Now I just need to fix my alternator problem and a new TPS error I am getting because I disconnected the wires when trying to get at the alternator.

Well, hopefully it stays fixed.

For now, I am doing my water testing in lake Quinsigamond (Worcester), which is close and still big enough to have room to move. We went to Singletary (sutton), but the water level was 6 feet low! So the ramp was useless and we gave up.

Once the boat is working we may go down to Webster or up to someplace in NH. I love Sunapee, but that is only worth it for a weekend, not simple day trips.

I'm open to suggestions... really just starting out on having my own boat. Used to just go wherever I could get a ride.

i work in worcester,live in rindge nh,about a hour from your house.i live off lake monomonoc.its small,but easy.good water till about noon on weekends in july and august.any other time this place is glass.if your in the neighborhood let me know.
