Almost a certainty you have a 1 inch diameter shaft.
The inside collar protects you from sinking due to a 1 inch hole in the boat (in the event of a catastrophic breakage). The outside one just protects the rudder - not as high of stakes. Both are rare failures, but I would guess the external breakage to be extremely rare, although someone here had it happen in the last year. |

Type 303 Stainless Steel
Bore OD Wd. Screw Size Each 1" 1 3/4" 1/2" 1/4"-28 6436K38 16.96 Pulled this off McMaster-Carr: Two-piece clamp-on Shaft Collar SS There's a zillion of them listed, By the chart the Bore is 1" so this would be the right size/type one for 1" shaft, correct? |

What are the thoughts on going for a zinc anode for the shaft inside the bilge next to the coupling?
The reason I ask is because can only find a UK source for an anode, not safety collar, something like this: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=111004206394&index=0&nav=SEARCH&nid=23116020696 Was thinking could buy a second one for just before the strut.. |

Jeff,
Chris pretty much said all. Yes on the 1" and on the inside where it does the most good. Besides X raying the shaft, there's no way of telling if it's going to fail. The best prevention is to make sure you alignment is good from the strut forward. Graham, Search for a "shaft collar" and not a "safety" collar. You should be able to find it. |
