did a lot of searching today and couldn't find a good photo or good answer to this question...how open should the choke plate be when fully warmed up?? should it be almost vertical?? i'm having trouble diagnosing a rough idle and suspect the choke is not fully opening...when hot it's about 30 deg. off vertical...it's fully closed when cold...maybe overly closed??

Yup, perfectly vertical.
Yup, overly closed. Set it about 1/16" from fully closed when cold and it shouldnt have any problem opening all the way when warm. Or, adjust it such that the choke is out of the picture entirely (always open). Ive never found them very useful... my best starting boat (especially cold) is not utilizing the choke. |

Pretty sure it should be a lot closer to vertical than that when fully warm. This is going to sound real techinical, but make sure that weird linkage mechanism isn't flipped around the wrong direction or something. I think I remember having to re-position the choke linkage while re-assembling my carb after the rebuild.

Nick,
When cold, it should be almost closed. Try adjusting it to be more open when cold and see if it makes a difference. I seem to remember Tim mentioning he uses a 1/16" drill bit to set the open gap. If not, then you may need a new bimetalic spring. Do check to make sure you are getting power to it when the ignition is on. |

Just did a little more research and found out the "linkage" I had issues with was the fast idle cam. It's not used for marine carbs, but that linkage is still in there. It was flipped the wrong way and was preventing the choke from opening fully.

Yeah, the marine versions don't have the fast idle cam. I think you might be talking about the choke qualifying linkage? This linkage is supposed to use engine vacuum to pop the choke open a little after the boat starts so it doesn't "choke" it off entirely. |

i think this may be part of my problem...i wasn't able to move it manually to fully vertical...the linkage was hitting something. unfortunately, this boat now lives up north so I won't be able to check/fix it until next weekend. |

Nick, that sounds very similar. Mine was bound mechanically as well. I couldn't manually open it up all the way either.
This is the part, which according to Holley is the Fast Idle Cam. This is on my carb, but it is not linked to anything.

I think I just didn't have it clocked into the right spot. If this really is your problem, you'll easily be able to see where it's hitting/binding.

The lower 90 degree bend in the choke actuator rod goes in the crook. |

i was up north last weekend so I had a chance to inspect my choke...i had the lower 90 bend in the choke rod ABOVE the fast idle cam...this prevented the choke from opening fully and gave me a very rough idle. easy fix...didn't even need tools. of course, shortly after I fixed that, the boat developed a surging at wakeboard speed...found some trash in one of the main jets and she's running like she should again.
