I have read through the shaft seal threads and I am not sure if it is the same as they are describing so here is a picture. The hose connects to a fitting in the bottom of the boat which goes through the hull and this other part with the grease fitting secures to the top of the hose in the picture. I do not see any packing material in the hose, through the hull or anywhere. There is some sort of seal in the part in the fitting, more like a gasket. Where is the packing supposed to go? Just in the hose against the hull fitting? Is the little grease ring in the fitting replacable? What kind of grease is supposed to be injected in here?
Thanks in advance. This is the part in the boat. No nut or anything. The hose connects directly to this fitting. |

The packing goes in the fitting. The fitting should be two pieces. None of my boats has the grease fitting...just two brass fittings that screw together and smash the packing into the shaft for a seal. When you take it apart, you'll notice an inside bevel that makes the packing extrude when you tighten up on the fittings.
Packing can be ordered through Skidim. Glad your changing the hose! My '72 had resin poured all over the fitting in the boat (your second picture) so your pretty lucky that you can pull the hose without hours of grinding, cussing etc. |

pswann,
Your shaft seal is NOT the original. At some time it was replaced with a new "dripless" shaft seal. The packing gland that 64skier described is what was originally installed in your boat. I don't think your new dripless shaft seal uses flax packing rope. |

Thanks for the responses. I talked to CC and they said this configuration doesnt belong on this tique. Your reply also explains why I couldnt locate any packing. With the seal being damaged and no replacement seal available to me since I cannot identify who it came from I will be replacing it with a CC recommended part. That shaft separation sure was a challenge.

Not sure if I would classify this as a dripless seal. Not really sure what the PO did here but I would not put this back on and would get a dripless seal instead of a packing style seal. With the shaft rpm a dripless seal will have to have a water feed to cool it.

Looks like I was able to locate the old part. It is here.
Seal type stuffing box A cheap solution that has been working. I am going back with the packing type since I am out of money on this tique and still have more money to spend. The next guy can pay for the 200 dollar dripless. |

That seal is from Glen L or Rex marine.Glen L no longer use a single seal. They use a double seal and you must put water thru it. All or most high power boats use them. Also Rex Marine sells them.
