Have a 1990 Ski Nautique with a 1.23:1 transmission. Have changed the trans fluid before using a suction pump and hose. Isn't there an easier way, like draining it?
Surely some ingenious soul has created a drain kit like the ones used for engine oil? |

The only other way that some may think is easier (I don't) is to unhook a oil cooler line & let the tranny pump out the oil.
That sets you up for a leak when you reconnect. Pumping out isn't too hard, IMO. It only needs to be done 1 per year. |

Hey everyone! New to CCF. I am also wondering if there is a better way than just sucking it out the dipstick hole. I have a 2000 Super Air. Should i be able to get all of the fluid (2 quarts) out?

Chris,
Regrettably the answer is pretty much no. As Chris did mention, Eric our trans expect has mentioned it several times that it is possible to pull one of the lines running to the cooler. Just suck it and replace the oil with whatever you suck out. Welcome to CCfan and of course, we also DEMAND pictures as well as a diary entry!

To be perfectly clear, I should disconnect tranny fluid line and suck out of that? I was trying to suck fluid through the dipstick hole to no avail.
I tried 2 known working pumps and neither sucked much out of the dipstick tube. Dipstick still reads full/near full??? This is a PCM 1:23. |

You will probably need a smaller diameter piece of tubing on the end of the suction device to fit down the dip stick tube. Just don't jamb it down too far. One of our very trusted and knowledgeable members did stick a piece of tubing down his and couldn't get it out!!!

but yes I tried that until it bottomed. Funny you mentioned the stuck tubing, that did happen but fortunaely a nice long pair of needlenose pulled it out. I will try again, as I bought a 3rd tranny pump last week. Seems as though the roundness of the case and the tight clearances have the suction tube bending around what I assume are the planetary gears. Maybe the tube is getting pinched off and limiting suction. just wanted to make sure my method was correct. |

What type of pump are your using? Many have found the turkey baster out of the kitchen drawer to work well. (just don't tell the cook in the kitchen!!) Others have found that the little cosmetic pumps you get on top of the hand cream bottles to do the same. Yes, you will not get it all out. Only pulling the trans out and opening it up will do that.

You need 1/8 inch ID copper tubing (Ice maker feed) to get down into the sump.
I use the cosmetic pump $2 but it is tedious. Some have the vacuum tank ($60) which is actually a good investment - I would like to buy one. |

I use the tall shampoo bottle, cosmetic hand pump, that Pete describes above. You do have to make sure it goes all the way down into the sump area. I do measure what comes out....into old oil or transmission fluid bottles. It is a little tedious, but it is cheap and works well.
