   Raw water pump leaking a bit. 74 T-E 351. Temp still good. Hard to determine source, appears to be at the shaft (Morfoot was there and might be able to shed more light).

Would appreciate further diagnosis & repair ideas, thanks.

	If there is a slight leak at the shaft, I would assume that it's the shaft seal leaking a bit. Not uncommon. Get a new seal, pull the pump, remove the impeller, then the shaft, then the seal. Replace and reassemble. Pretty simple. When was the impeller last changed? Probably wouldn't hurt to do that at the same time if it's been a while.

	There should be some snap rings in there too. When you take the impeller out, pay close attention to the order of the parts to the seal kit. There should be two parts that slide on the shaft and a spring. I would change the bearing also, if it got wet from the leak, it's a matter of time before it starts making some noise.

	Update and new questions: Replaced impeller. Pump is also Thermo-Electron brand so assumed original. No idea where to source seals, parts, etc for this 39 year old pump, so still leaks a bit at shaft. Have heard from a number of sources this is not an uncommon issue. 1) Drips hit the belt and sling water around a bit, otherwise runs great with good temp. I presume it's probably dripped for quite some time and has always run fine. Other than a bit of water in the bilge, is running as-is a major cause for concern or imminent failure, and if so, failure of what? 2) Boat has sat since fall, any likelihood the seal will soak up a bit and improve with use? 3) Anyone know anything about T-E pumps, repair, and parts info and sourcing? 4) Would like to avoid total replacement, but if so, any suggestions matching something up to this dinosaur of a pump?

	The seal is commercially available through any power transmission distributor. It should have a number on it. If not, get the calipers out. Check the runout on the bearings. As long as you have it torn down, I'd replace them too.

	jeff, when you end up doing this, i would love to see some pictures or just some explanation. mine leaks a fews drops a minute, i've found very little info on this. i think i bookmarked a website i found with seal kits and parts to LOTS of raw water pumps but it's on my other computer, i'll look tomorrow.

	jbach: It's all back together and reinstalled s not likely I'll be taking it all back apart in the near future. Was hoping for an answer to my question about potential harm running as-is but no one replied. I presume just watch to see if the dripping increases, investigate any new sounds, and watch temp guage per usual oughta do it. Ideally, it can wait till the next impeller go-round and by then I can look at the photos of YOUR repair Which pump and year do you have and how long has it leaked?

	i have a gt-40 with a sherwood rwp. not sure of the model but i believe it was used on most 302-351 applications. i'm just barely weaping out of it currently, so i'll probably wait to rebuild until layup in the fall. i assume water is running across/through the bearings which probably isn't too good for them, it's still turning smooth. for future reference, rebuild parts can be found here, and they are EXPENSIVE. i'll be sourcing the bearings/seals locally. intetmarine.com Inetmarine.com

	I sure wish mine was sherwood, would make life much easier. Mine says Thermo-Electron, same as the engine, and T-E's been gone a looong time. Since T-E was a marinizer, I doubt they made their own raw water pumps, and probably had made somewhere else under their name. Who knows. I'll take and post a photo sometime, maybe someone can recognize it.
