I Am new to this site and also new to owning a inboard. Sat. I put my boat in the water for the first time and every thing was great. I live on a lake so i just pulled the boat up to keep it from floating away over night. The next day i went down to check on it the back of the boat had about 10 inches of water in it. So i pulled the motor cover off to find that water had filled almost flush to the floor. I have plugs in and i didn't rain enough to bring that much water into my boat. Would it have anything to do with the intake valves you open when you put the boat in the water. I have no clue please help

Thanks for your time

You are probably leaking through the packing where the rudder and drive shaft enter the boat. It depends how long ago there were packed, how tight they are, and whether the packing gland for the drive shaft nut is wired in place or if it has turned loose while running the boat. Search repacking on the forum and you will find an explanation and pictures. If you had a leaky hose your boat would have had more water in it.

Not sure what you mean by intake valves. Anyway, I assume you got it pumped out. Like rick said, with it pumped out, and sitting in the water look for leaks. Packing gland is one, rudder or exhaust ports are another. You would see water trickling into the engine compartment from the stern. If all that appears to be tight, I have one more. You dont mention how big or rough your lake is or what boat you have, but it is very easy for waves to wash over the transoms of these boats if the wind comes up or big boats go by, especially if you beached it with the bow up higher.

Phil,
Yes, tell us more about the "intake valves" you mentioned. Are these valves that were added at through hull intakes? What engine?

Tighten the packing nut by hand. If it runs hot then it's too tight or needs a repack. As mentioned, it does need to drip some since it's water lubricated.

A moored boat needs an automatic bilge pump.

"Intake valves"????

Pictures???

Is there suppose to be some kinda of seal that goes into the piece that slides towards motor when unscrewed. Also When i tightened the piece closest to the motor it would not tighten as far as the nut would go is that normal. Here is a pic

Phil,
The narrow jam nut needs to be run aft before the larger packing nut can be tightened to compress the packing.

No, there isn't a true seal inside. The seal is a rope packing cut in rings compressed around the shaft by the packing nut. If tightening the packing nut doesn't slow the drip and it runs hot, then, as mentioned, a repack is needed. I'd say that it's your best option. For rope packing, I suggest the Gortex. Skidim has it.

BTW, I also suggest checking the engine to prop shaft alignment. I think I can smell some rot in the stringers from here! The engine may have shifted due to that.

Phil,
Here's a video on alignment that I feel will help you understand the procedure.
If the alignment is bad, you could trash your trans. Don't overlook it.

You never answered the question about what the "intake valves" are????

72smoothie. You don't need a marine supply store to get the packing. You can go to an industrial supply house like Motion Industries. I think it is a 3/16" graphite or Teflon impregnated packing. Either will work. I have replaced the packing in all three of my Nautiques that I have owned. If motion doesn't have it, they can point you in the right direction. It's also fairly inexpensive.

Take the gland nut off (Large end pc, not just lock nut).   This is with boat out of water, of course!    Get a pick or very small screwdriver & pull out the pld pcs.   Cut 3 new pcs that are long enough to wrap around the shaft. Make the cuts so the ends meet cleanly. I make the length a little oversize for good compression.    Then 'stuff' the gland nut with the pcs, alternating where the end cuts are.

Reassemble the gland nut & adjust medium hand tight. Tighten lock nut lock nut. Put boat in water & readjust so that it leaks about 1 dip every 5 seconds. Maybe 1/2 that rate if you use Goretex. Then run the boat & make sure it isn't getting hot.

Good luck, let us know how it went.

Okay installed the packing and put boat in the water i am getting a drip from it but not sure how to tell if boat is running hot? Also, I had a question about getting air to the motor. i have a blower that has two red hoses running from it and ends just before the motor. But on the end is kinda like a pool hose attached and it is blowing air out. I think that when i ride with the cover over the motor its not getting any air and some times chokes it out. There again not sure on any of this.
Thanks

P.S. Old Wax and graphte

Pictures of the bilge blower set up would really help. A bilge blower is used when you aren't moving creating a natural flow of air. No, a lack of air is not causing your engine to "choke out". You have other issues. When was the last time the carb was rebuilt?

not sure how would i tell. I have only had the boat for a little over 2 months. and probably ran it less than 1 full hr on the water trying to make sure everything is working properly. But not really knowledgeable in this area.

Confused

Put your hand on the packing gland. If its hot, you'll know. Cool or just slightly warm is what youre shooting for.
