The Throttle control arm (Teleflex?) on my '97 is getting slowly worse and was wondering if anyone has experience lubricating these things. I don't think it's the cable because it is very easy and smooth in reverse but getting it from neutral through forward is difficult. Any advice or instruction would be appreciated.

Disconnect the cables at the control and find out if it is the helm control or the cables. My money is on the cables.

Pete,

My 79 had face screws so the whole control could be removed for access to the cables. Will I need to remove the control to disconnect the cable?

Yes, you should have 3 in the base and then 4 bolts holding the cable mounting plate to the body. Since you feel it's the control you'd have to remove it anyway.

An alternate is IF you can get a wrench on the backside, is to just remove the cable arms from their shafts.

I am going to go out on a limb here. More than likely the cables are good but they do need to be disconnected and checked. What I have seen before and quite often is the brass ferrule that rides on a post and slides in a groove on the back of the operational cam. commonly the grease goes away and the ferrule gets worn and the control action becomes hard to operate.
Provided the cables are not the problem the control comes apart pretty easy and is very serviceable.
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

Thanks guys. I got three nuts off but it will barely move. This chrome 1 1/2" ish nut around the arm must need to come off. Any tricks you can recommend? It's not a tool I use regularly enough to buy.

Retract that last one. It just needed a quick pop and it came off. I'll disconnect the cables and see what I have going on.

I got the throttle control off and cables disconnected and the control mech moved efortlessly. The throttle cable moved smoothly, full range. The transmission cable moved fine but the lead (the solid 4" section where the cable connected to the transmission) was bent slightly. This kept it from moving the full range, which was about 2" from the end, without some extra force. I didn't think this would have the affect it did but it seems to be the only bind. I'll replace the cable but now I have the controll off, I'll grease it.

I know the cables aren't that old but I suggest as long as you are changing one, do both. It's just as easy to pull two through as it is one. Plus, the new Xtreme cables are a big improvement over the old. How do the brass ends look? Put new in as well.

I was thinking the same thing. While I'm at it, I might as well replace both. The brass cable connectors looked great and I replaced all the ball joint ends last year. Thanks.

Pete, It looks like SkiDim has the Xtreme cables and DIM has Uflex. Are they that much better?

Uflex are the cheapies. Get the TFXtremes from Go2marine.

The replacement was much easier that expected. Now 1002 uses for duct tape. (I taped one end of each old cable to the ones and pulled through) What a difference! One finger operation now! The throttle arm has some play but I can live with it.
