looking for info on fluid replacement. i have just gotten involved with a 1979 martinique (351/v-drive) and would like to know what others use for engine oil weight and guidance for v-drive fluid. i want to chage it all before start up due to sitting out of water for over 4 years. engine spins and has compression (little less than desireable but okay) and it's holding existing oil with no leaks visible. question is what is fluid in v-drive and how much? and what viscosity motor oil in engine? thanks and i will put a picture/diary with backstory on how this came to be my project real soon. thanks, mikeĀ®

You want to use an oil with ZDDP. Valvoline racing oil is a good one.
For your trans use any Dexron Mercon

Look for the 20w 50 in the silver bottle. Sometimes it's on sale at Autozone or O'Reilly's. Don't use a Fram oil filter,Motorcraft or NAPA are good. Use a good ATF oil no synthetics

thanks guys! fire up is planned for monday or tuesday (got plans this weekend) i will close this post out with the results. right now the carb is in chem-dip and my next trip to napa is tomorrow. should have it all back together by end of the weekend with new fluids and possibily in the water by month end. thanks again for the quick answers, mikeĀ® - ps bible to come......................

oil extracted! napa gold filter in place and vr1 20w-50 (valvoline dIII/m in v-drive) installed. new plugs and rebuilt carb going in on friday and dry fire this weekend. hopefully no problems/questions about that. have a well respected mechanic friend who suggested putting anitfreeze in the out side of water pump and rotating by hand to pre-lubricate. sounded good so i already did it, any input? also, the boat owner (check bible info - should be up in a day or two - for explanation) said we should "soak" inside of direct drive shaft before introduction to lake to avoid leaking because it's been sitting. input and further directions please?

next post this weekend after fire up. please address my new concern by then, thanks!!!

Dry fire? Hope you don't mean running the boat without water, that is very bad...if you need more info search for the Water Bucket Method.

Also, if you are not aware, don't put it in gear if running on trailer, the shaft/cutlass bearing/etc need water for lubrication.

I'm sure someone else will pipe in with more useful advice.

As long as you don't fire the motor without cooling water you'll be fine.Don't put it in gear either until it's in water. The best way to run it out of water is to remove the intake hose and put it into a bucket,that way you can see if the pump is pumping on it's own.Another way is to connect your garden hose right to the the intake hose. When done tighten hoses back up with a nut driver to prevent leaks. As to the shaft leaking,it's supposed to drip a few drops a minute so the seal does not burn so if it does drip you should know it right after you launch,I don't think I'd worry about that yet but might be on the list for replacement later.

Sorry, learning terminology as I go (kind of like all this boat stuff) so bear with me please. I have the diary set out so check it out: http://www.correctcraftfan.com/diaries/details.asp?ID=6516.

I will not start without cooling water but am happy to hear the bucket method because I know to apply water to intake but was concerned on how to find out if the pump would pick up without hose pressure. I will use bucked at start up then attach hose if further running is necessary. I plan to lake test on the second weekend of august and will NOT apply power to v-drive till in the water. I will run the motor this weekend due to carb rebuild and sitting for a few years but only with cooing water flowing. Also new fluids, plugs, filters and battery need to be confirmed good before maiden voyage.

Big question is: do I soak the inside of the shaft seal before putting back in the water? If so how long before and with just water and how much?

Mike,
A V drive is when the engine is all the way aft. It's called a "V" since it reverses the direction of the shaft. Engine output forward then the V box and the prop shaft goes under the engine aft.

No you don't need to soak the prop shaft stuffing. Once in the water, the water will get to it.
