I removed the decals from my 99 Air Nautique and had a professional restore the gel coat. I let the decals off. I like the look better. Anyway, there is a lot of ghosting still visible. The guy who did it said there is nothing you can do about it. Its too deep to get out. Is this possible?

Yes, this is typical. Your best option is to put the decals back on.

I second that statement, I just painted and reapplied decals on my boat. I could see my old decal "ghosts" people told me they would be visible after new paint...Didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes..

I ended up having to re gel the complete transom on my Tique due to the PO having named the boat with vinyl lettering. Then having correct size "since" decals made for the hull sides. The ones available on line are not correct (too small) to cover the ghosting.

What I've learned is there is no substitute for indoor storage. This boat has been outside, albeit covered, its entire life. Something to think about when its time to upgrade.

Michael,
It's a combination of the porous gel collecting dirt and the color change over time due to UV light.

My graphics were removed less than a month after boat was purchased in OKC May of 92. When it is freshly compounded the ghosting shows, when you go over with wax they disappear. You can feel the difference in the gel that was covered by decal even for that short a period, I assume its from curing of resin but maybe from a couple month of sun before we received it. This boat never sees the great outdoors except when in use and no ghosting from any angle when waxxed.
