I know someone on this site has a great looking red Honda Z50. I had a '71 when I was 10 years old. Actually it was mine, and my two brothers. It looked just like this one. If this was closer to me, I would be picking it up tonight.
Honda Trail 50 I am on the hunt for a Z50. This one is the deal of the day, though it's a little far from me. I saw this same bike in a cycle shop two miles from my house. The guy was asking $4500. He had another of the same original model, but he installed a 110CC Chinese engine. He was asking $3500 for that non-original. '68 Z50 |

My youngest brother still owns mine, which I gave to him when he was a kid. Not in that condition, but it still runs. He has a 2 years old son, who I imagine will be riding it soon enough. BKH

Hoping to pick this up on the weekend. One of the reasons I started looking for one of these is that my brother-in-law, and his neighbor, have this great idea of racing mini-bikes on the ice this winter. His neighbor picked up one of those Chinese Baja's. I want to go old school.

Steve, this looks like a 78 model Z50. I still have my 78 and it looks exactly like the one pictured less the chrome front fender. My front fender is orange and I'm certain original. Funny you posted this as I'm about to order a new carb for mine. My 8 and 5 year old girls are itching to ride it. |

You're correct; it is a '78. Looking at it 1:00 Saturday. It's only 8 miles from my house. You are only 100 miles from the '71 I linked in my opening post. That's exactly what I had, 40 years ago. |

A likely story Steve. Blame it on the Girls. We all know it's YOU that wants to ride it again. |

Toys we had as kids and would like to have now:
Mary Ann Sandy Kim Tina Red ( Can not remember her name). I would love to ride them again, but they likely have not held up as well was those old bikes from the 70's. Probably best to just hang on to the memory that is in my mind. Donald |

Let's keep those kind of toys out of this thread. I know if I bring up the chick from my buddy Squeek's graduation party, or the hottie from the Rolladium, this thread could be as long as "You didn't build that". |

Tim,
Yep, as the only male at home, I take the blame for pretty much everything. I feel no guilt about assigning blame like this when I get the chance. Yes, I do want to ride it tho. |

Let me know guys if you need parts,I know of several
online places.Simple parts like bolts, gaskets etc, can still be bought at your Honda dealer saving you shipping. Don't fall into the nos trap on ebay, for the most part if they are on there you can still get them from the dealer. There are exceptions. Here is a pic of my son on the ice having a great time . The 50 I got for the Christmas of '69. The 70 I got in '99 after it had been moved outside to make room in the original owners garage.I put on a 4 speed manual and an 85cc kit.The xr was bought for our son for Christmas of '99. Good luck on what ever you get. |

Swat,
No, I did not get it yet. The guy got called out of town until the middle of next week. So bummed. Hope you are rolling for the long weekend. Gary, That '69 is a mirror image of the one at Phil's Cycle Shop for $4500. Don't be banging that up too much on the ice. The guy I hope to get the 50 from says he also has a mint blue CT70 like yours. He was talking about $850. I will be sure to take along a few extra C notes, in case I can score a package deal. If my wife goes with me, it can be good, or bad, for the outcome of the sale. You mentioned that you put on a 4 speed manual. The guy I'm dealing with said he put on a manual clutch on the 50. I like the original centrifugal clutch, which he says he has and will go with the bike. How difficult is it to switch back. |

Question for both of you;
Notice in the photo of the Z50 I posted. The section between the head and the crank is brushed silver cast, like the rest of the engine. All the original Honda engines I've seen have a black section (like all three of Gary's bikes). He says this is an all original bike, but I want to make sure. I will not buy a non-original. What do you think? I have not asked him about it. |

Steve is this the bike that is now a manual? If it is you'll have to check engine serial numbers for starters. SL70's were the only models that had a silver cylinder. A z's engine serial will start with Z50AE. If that checks out look on the cylinder itself. On the left side in plain view the size is marked,49cc for the 50,72cc for a 70. The exception is aftermarket cylinders,my 85 kit is marked 49cc,but it is aluminium with a liner. Engine serial numbers do not match the frame. Many are close, some right on,others within a couple of hundred and in my Z's case 6000 off. The more popular the model production wise the more it can be off. On my CT70 I kept the original engine and put on a 4 speed manual engine from a CT70H. Converting yours back from a manual to auto is nothing more than replacing the clutch, gear shift spindle and side cover. If you need parts to convert it back let me know,I have a parts motor

I am happy to report that the story of the guy going out of town was a ruse. My wife contacted the seller and bought the bike out from under me. The morning I was to pick it up, the seller emailed and called me to tell me he was called out of town for 10 days. A couple days later, he actually delivered it to my house and my wife hid it at the neighbors until yesterday, our 25th wedding anniversary. She gave me a watch, and said she would like to engrave the back of it. On the back was a photo. It took me a moment to realize the photo was her, sitting on the Z50. I probably looked like a kid, jumping around asking where it is. It was in our sun porch.

Since I'm a little too late to talk about the fun toys I got to ride in high school I still have what I rode up to that point. My BMX bike, or should I say my collection of parts. I pretty much have everything that I had to spend time and effort to come by and everything is now on somewhat rare 24in Bontrager frame. I still ride it every few weeks around the neighborhood.

I did what it comes down to a foolish thing a few years back (about 12 - 14 years ago). My little cousin was telling me how tough it was getting around, so I told him he could take my old BMX I had stored in a box above my parents garage. He was a happy kid, I was sad to see it go...I asked him a few years ago if he still had it and it turns out his parents sold it shortly after he brought it down to Florida. Absolutely kills me, sells it for a couple hundred when it was worth so much more...should have asked if I wanted it back (I certainly would have). I see a VDC on ebay every now and then but they want thousands for it, I wish I said no to him and still had it around for my boys to ride.

I did finally give my prized Hutch frame and forks away about 12 years ago. I had tried to ride it and it was just too small. It may have made a bike for my son these days, but I couldn't stand to watch it get abused the way he treats his bike so its best I do t know what happened to it.

Steve,
Great looking bike. Looks familiar. My bike is giving trouble. I'll paste my comments from lilhonda.com in which I describe the problem. Perhaps someone here can offer suggestions. 1978 Z50. I recently purchased a new aftermarket replacement carb for the bike. It ran poorly due to what I think was an air leak at the intake site. I replaced gaskets and thick rubber gasket which should've stopped the air leak. I have the valve clearance set at .002 and .003 (Int/Ex). Needle clip is set right in the middle. New spark plug with a strong spark. Bike will not start. If it does, it runs for 3-5 seconds and then shuts off. I can get no amount of air screw/idle screw or needle clip adjustment to get the bike to continue running. Bike will also not run if carb cleaner is shot into the spark plug hole. Advice? |

Hey Steve saw your post on the mini site! After many years mine had the same low compression problem. Be very careful now you don't want to strip the splines on the kickstarter. With low compression you have a tendency to kick it over faster putting quite a load on that assy. If you damage it the whole engine has to be disassembled. Check now at least to make sure the bolt holding it on is tight.
You can put some oil in the cylinder and see if the compression comes up,if it does it's the rings. You most likely will need to do a top end rebuild anyway. I replaced both valves and the valve seal and the rings. Mine was just tired, not abused so it didn't need anything else, even the bore was good. While yours is apart you can check the cam chain and sprockets. Here is a good place to buy parts,I have used them for years. PM me if you need help or if you want to talk, and we should before you start taking it apart, not a big fan of Clymers. |

Gary,
Specifically, what does a top end rebuild entail? I'm guessing, piston, rings, honing if necessary, valves and associated valve components? What should I expect to pay the Honda dealer to do this work? All of that is just beyond what I have the time and comfort level to stomach. The other thing is that I'd like to get the service provided right away so that my girls (and me) can start riding. |

Steve your correct, all that stuff and while it's apart check the cam chain and sprockets. I have not had good experences with the dealer.1 they don't like to work on old stuff,2 old ones are different than the new. You'd have to check with your dealer and see. I had mine do the valves on a head I brought in about 7-8 yrs ago,I would have gotten better results throwing the money in the street.
