I have an '82 Nautique Excel that has been having trouble staying in idle right when I start it. I have to give it a ton of gas in neutral for a while...then it runs fine. I am not too mechanically inclined and am wondering if anyone knows of someone in Minnesota who knows about the PCM 351 engines and could give it a once over?
This is my second summer owning the boat, and I'd like to keep it running well for as long as possible. It would be nice to have someone who knows more than me give it a once over and provide their opinion. Thanks! |

First off start by telling us when this happens. Is it on a hot start after the engine has ran? Or cold start first start of the day? Do you have to pump the throttle or actually hold it up at an RPM after the engine starts?
Tons of factors to go over. |

I am 50 miles west of Mpls on 94. Offhand, I would pull the carb and get a rebuild done before the ice goes off. Then work from there... You have a couple weeks minimum.

I take my boat to Son Watersports in the Ramsey/Anoka area. They are fantastic people, no BS, and they have owned they boats they are working on. Family run business as well. Highly, highly recommended! It's certainly a drive for me (44 miles, SE Metro), but totally worth it.

Big plus one there. The are also PCM certified and have been for I believe 15 years. Mark and Dave are a good bunch of guys. If it's over my head they are the place that gets the call. |

Son Water Sports is top notch! They listen, help and will advise you on the best course of action. They not only own these boats, they ski behind them! Their background goes way back, both Mark and Dave are great people!

Thanks everyone! I will try and respond in an organized manner:
- Yes, the engine is carburated. We rebuilt the carb. last summer and it worked very well for a month or so before this problem came up. I will look into the choke and see if I can figure out if it is working properly. Might need a hand. Spark plugs were new last year as well. - This happens on cold starts only. After skiing for a while, turning off the engine and turning it back on it seems to start fine. On the cold start, I have been pumping the throttle to get her to go. - Thanks for the recommendation to Son Watersports. That is actually where I bought the boat from and I was not aware that they serviced as well as sold Nautiques. |
