Starbrite has a nice one for general cleaning. We use it before we wax/compound our boats in the boatyard.

If you have heavy algae buildup or rust stains, you can't beat MaryKate's On & Off.
http://www.amazon.com/MaryKate-On-Off-Bottom-Cleaner/dp/B0000AXNNA Beware, this stuff is insanely strong and will burn your lungs, skin, eyes, trailer, etc. Use long gloves and wipe it on with a sponge and hose it off. If you use a spray bottle make sure the boat is dry or you'll smoke up your neighborhood when it hits the moisture. Algae and rust stains will literally disappear before your eyes, though. |

If you are using on / off hull cleaner do not store any of left over procuct in anything other than the original container. When I apply this product I use a spray bottle which I have found to be good for applying but not good for storage of left over product. BTW this stuff works very good but keep it off antying painted and try not to enhale.

I think this is a critical step when using the acid type hull cleaners. I've been doing some testing for several seasons and it seems to me that the cleaners have a tendency to etch the gel coat surface slightly. Although the hull looks clean and stain free after use of these cleaners, the staining seems to come back very quickly in the dark colored water where my boat spends most of its life. This is in spite of the fact that the boat is on a lift a wiped down immediately after use. To avoid this, I've found buffing and waxing after a good rinse of the acid bath helps to slow the time it takes for the staining to re-occur. I've tried a number of products on several sections of the hull and had very good luck with Colinite cleaner/wax. Areas that haven't been buffed or have had other waxes applied seem to pick up the stains much more quickly. |

Second on the Mary Kate's On-Off Hull cleaner. Build up just falls off. Have seen it take off bottom stains that hadn't been touched in years. Also second the re-wax after use. Seems to keep the hull cleaner longer.
Just be careful the stuff is nasty. |

I like to use Clorox toilet bowl cleaner with bleach...especially after you get some scum build up!

I used the 'works' toilet bowl cleaner this spring and wasnt to impressed with the results. However, a couple weeks ago I used 3m gelcoat restorer and holy smokes did it clean things up. I did it all by hand and the results were awesome, I couldnt imagine what it would do with a buffer. After that I followed it up with collinite wax. Great results.

I found on some other forums that people with sailboats have been using Bar Keepers Friend. I had some under the sink and gave it a try. Wow! Works great!! Then waxed the boat with Colinite. Happy happy happy!

The Bar Keepers Friend is pretty abrasive but it does contain oxalic acid which is great on the stains especially iron.

Liquid tide. Install drain plug. Mix water and tide and drive around the block a few times.

Jeremy, The original question was for cleaning the hull and you are posting cleaning the bilge. That's cool since many do like to clean their bilge too. Sloshing a soap solution around the bilge does work. Many have found Dawn dish washing liquid works in the bilge as well. It seems to really cut the grease/oils. |

I stapled a rag onto a stick & swapped away under the engine. Hot water helps cut the grease too.

+1 for a treatment with the works from a spray bottle (let sit for a few minutes) followed up by a scrub and rinse with a soft cotton terry-cloth rag prior to a good wax. Takes the stains and scum lines off with ease for me. Key is to wax it afterwards! The stuff is so cheap at dollar general I cant justify buying another product really even if I have to put in a little more elbow grease.
