I have been looking into installing an invisible dog fence for our lake house but I am not sure about the online reviews out there. We have a 2 acre lot and want to keep the dog on our property.
Our dog is a 10 month old boxer/shepherd mix weighing about 90-100 lbs. Does anyone have any good recommendations or experiences using these set ups. |

I have seen them work but I also saw a golden have to be put to sleep after biting several people who petted it's neck where the shocker would be.

We had a Bull Terrier that was kinda crazy. He would run at the border, wince, & just keep going thru the pain! After he learned to break out, it was useless.

We bought a cheap one and it was a waste of time and money. Gave my lab inconsistent warning signals which really messed.with her training. Purchased a good quality system. Dogwatch. And it has been awesome. After training her 8 years ago she has not left the yard. She was super hyper and we live in a community with a lot of temptations.....kids cats other dogs but it has worked great. Just need a dependable system and taking the time to train them.

My friends Husky did the same, jerked his head a bit but ran right thru.
I did recently see a video of my neighbors kid getting zapped whilst wearing one, so while they may not work well for dogs they are apparently quite entertaining at a college keg party......... |

That was probably the case with mine - it was a hand-me-down, can't get any cheaper than that! |

I have 3 acres and used the PetSafe hand held electric shock collar and it worked great. I had, just put him down last month , 100# boxer and it worked wonders, very pleased. It took me about 3 weeks and little zapping and he was trained. Now, will see how it works on my English Mastiff....

I have an acre fenced with invisible fence brand other than cutting the fence a few times thru the 15 yrs i have had it It has never failed, heavy wire is key to it working well I started with two collars i only replaced one receiver last yr one is still original, my dogs are in the fish pond every day from spring to fall, and the system is on dog number six in 15 yrs. I also highly recommend paying the extra money for a half day trainer . more for you than the dog . do it once then you will train any other dogs in a couple of days .

Have one for our 2 dogs and it's great. Suffered a few breaks in the wire, but you can use an AM radio tuned to the frequency to find where the break is. We just have a cheap system but it's held up ok.
Obviously you have to have the discipline to train your dog on the fence the right way and not rush through it, but it's pretty easy. |

It's also a requirement to try it out on yourself before you put it on your dog.

I have some good friends who are now the Invisible Fence distributors in TX & NM, it works. They also do some reall cool things with them. Their lakehouse is done so their Labs can swim, they just have to stay behind the house.
It all depends on your dog, when I used to run dogs quail hunting each one was different and had to have their own collar settings. I've seen small ones take the highest setting and just give you a bad look for doing that, and I've seen others twice that size take a low setting and become absolutely useless for about an hour. Because of that I would say use a pro installer who can get it setup properly. |

Ok - finally something in my profession..........
A dog's ability to be contained by an underground fence is related to his prey drive and personality (stubborness). Arctic Circle breeds and fighting dog breeds have personality attributes that don't respond to the collar signals .... they often are NOT contained. As far as equipment goes - you get what you pay for. You can self install Wally Weekender kits..... and you can contract Invisible Fence. There is awesome customer support and a wider array of control and containment options with Invisible Fence Corp. than other companies and certainly than do-it-yourself. Look into it, you will find your comfort level price-wise and with needed functionality..... (BTW - the Invisible Fence folks can keep the dogs out of litter boxes and areas of the house with the collars...pretty neat options)! PM me if you need more info..... |

mine only has had two other issues . my brittany female will not cross it for a hot dog but a good smelly neighbors trash bag is sometimes worth the jolt. my male springer (napolean complex) will run across attack any large male dog run back thru and high 5 paw the female.

I used an e collar on my bird dogs. Took a few days, then allowed them out unattended while watching through the window. Warned them when they got close to the edge. Give them a refresher every so often. Haven't had many unauthorized excursions.
