So I am out in my friends ’81 BFN this morning and had forgot that when in neutral that the boat still moves forward (kind of handy for keeping the line taught). Any thoughts on what may cause this?

You may have seen it described here before as a dirty neutral. I believe it indicates that the clutch plates are slightly warped. Not a death knell all by itself, but a bit of a nuisance and arguably a safety hazard. I would have him start saving his pennies for a tranny rebuild.

make sure its actually in neutral.. at the trans not at the stick. if it still turns chances are the plates are warped and now they drag a bit. Not too big a deal if it doesnt slip in gear, except for the safety aspect, if in doubt turn that thing off.

Thanks guys. He actually has another transmission in his garage. It has been this way for the last ~4 years.

Sounds like he won't lose any water time then! Our bfn dragged in neutral last year... Along with a bit of slippage and an occasional pop out of gear at high load. A rebuild fixed all of the above.
Post some pics of his boat- the early Bfns aren't very common! |
