I am planning to do a compression test on my 89 2001 (351 engine) and I understand that I need to pull the fuel pump relay in order to disable the fuel system. Can someone tell me exactly how to do that?
Thanks, Jeff N |

Jeff,
The relay plugs into it's wiring plug. It should have retaining clips on the sides. Depress the clips and pull the plug. |

When I tested compression, I didn't worry about the gas mixture entering the compression gauge. I did unhook the coil though.

X3. Not saying it's not impossible, but highly improbable. |

Guys,
Based on your responses, it appears I may have asked a "rookie" type question (still learning and appreciate your patience). The motor is the original 351 from 1989. That said, I was told the best way to compression test is to remove all of the spark plugs to begin with. If all of the plugs are out, won't I end up spraying gas around the inside of the boat when I test each cylinder? If so, how do I disable the fuel system to prevent this from happening? Thanks, Jeff N |

It won't spray gas. The open cylinders won't draw much mixture with the plugs out, since it is easier to draw air from the plug hole than the intake valve. You're good to go.

You should do a compression test with the engine warm to start with. Pull all the plugs, open the throttle wide open and make sure each cylinder cranks several times to get a good reading.

Dammit Tim, I didn't look at the year! I knew someone would get on my tail as soon as I saw the others chime in on asking if the boat had been repowered with a EFI. |

Jeff N, no worries. the 89's are carburated engines so you don't have to worry about disconnecting an electric fuel pump because there isn't one, it's mechanical.
Pete, we get to flex you so seldom (unless we are talking about tubing) that we are going to take full avantage of it when we can! |
