Our daughter and her friends are asking us to add an extended pylon to our 1993 Ski Nautique. Can anyone help in giving us the pros and cons of this addition? If the pros outnumber the cons are there one or two units for us to consider or stay away from? Thanks for your help. JT

Pros: Higher rope pull helps beginners get out of the water faster and more advanced riders will benefit from longer hangtime on jumps. Frees up seating behind the pylon while pulling skiers. Provides a potential place to mount ski/wakeboard racks to get them off the floor. Great for wakeboarding and barefooting. Cons: Has to be taken off to put cover on boat. Increases side to side roll when skier/wakeboarder cuts to each side. Increases clearance needed under bridges (ask me how I know, lol). Depending on model, might leave wear marks on factory pylon. The bow cables and harness will be in your vision while driving. As for which brand, I've always been partial to the Fly High model, mostly because it's a 2 piece unit that's a bit easier to store and it has two bow cables instead of one so it is rock solid. It also has a pylon-height ski tow so it doesn't need to come down if someone wants to slalom. I actually have an extra Fly High in my garage. It's well used but I'd be willing to part with it on the cheap if you're interested. Thanks, Brian |

If you're going to progress in wakeboarding, you're going to want an extended pylon or a tower. If you don't want to drill holes into your boat and "permanently" change the look of it, an extended pylon is the way to go.
I too have had the fly high and it is nice. Over time, the padding inside will wear out and it will start to scratch your pylon. For this reason, I suggest you buy new or devise a way of protecting your factory pylon. Also, make sure you realize that you don't hook the front cable up to your lifting rings; they provide a strap that goes around the tip of the bow and that is how you are supposed to do it, even if it looks like you have a more handy option. |

Hi Brian. Thanks for all the input! What are the chances you have pictures of your Fly High? At the point buying something used, in good condition is perfect. This is the first water skiing and wake boarding season for my daughter (11-years old.) I'm not enthusiastic about buying a new unit if she just burns out in a few months. Let me know what you have in mind.

Great Advice. We're having a great time with the boat. My wife has always wanted her own boat and my daughter is having fun learning to ski and board. It doesn't sound like you're sold on the Fly High. Is there another pylon you would suggest I look at? Thanks, JT |

I picked up a used stainless fly high for $200. There pretty easy to find used. Watch this site and craigslist.
