Ok...so the problem i am having is that the water pump(Sherwood D65 dual impellar water pump)on my 71 Promo 318 Chrysler will NOT draw raw water from pickups????

I've just about covered all the bases(as far as i know) on what to do...

1) Checked for pluged up pickups. Cleaned all hose fittings on both pickups.
2) I made sure all hose clamps were secure and no air leaks or holes in hoses.
3) Rebuilt water pump. ( front bearing was bad.) all new bearings gaskets and impellars. I even tried another water pump (exactly like the Promo water pump Sherwood D65)that i put new impellars in and tried but same issue??? that pump is off of a 68 318 chrysler that i had for a parts boat.
4) I also ran the boat in the driveway hooked up to a garden hose(hooked it up to the Raw water input hose) and it works great??? Ran it at low and higher RPM's with No issues.
5) Took boat back to boat ramp and tried it again with other water pump still same thing..... so this time i tried taking off the output side of the RAW water pump while it was running (thinking something in the motor was clogged) and no water was comming out??
6) I took off the Raw water hose at the pump input and lowered it down to below water leven in bottom of the boat and water pours out at FULL stream like it should....
7) I also have cleaned out the transmission cooler thinking maybe it was clogged........still same thing??

The impellars i use are Sherwood 9959K-SHW hope this was correct part # for use with these pumps....when i replaced them i checked and they seem to be exactly the same??...but just wanted to make sure.

Is there something i am missing here????? pretty simple i thought but have not figured it out yet???

Paul, sorry I missed your call last night... glad you posted this up.

Those are the correct impellers, so youre good there.

It sounds like your boat is set up with a single raw water pickup (like Chris's '72- my '70 has 2 pick ups), which then goes to both impellers... got a pic of the set up and other connections made between the pick up and pump?

Tim,

thanks for the response....

Mine does have the dual pick ups....they are tied together with a hose. then from there to the pump input...(input closest to the front of the motor)

one single hose from the pic ups and one hose that comes back from the trans. cooler.

I will take some photo's tonight of the set up and go from there

Don't know if this will help or not. My old 71 with a 318 not dual pick as I remember though.

So is it possible its installed backwards? Not unlike the ford pumps it looks like it could go either way and if its upside down it would pump the wrong direction?

here is another one from the site with a side view......i'm thinking the problem is found.

I can't believe that it could hook up the other way.. just doesn't seem possible with the way the hoses are????..my dumb ass should have taken pics of it before i took it apart. i guess i will let everyone know tomorrow....

even with all the problems i have two rebuilt pumps now....i guess that is a positive!

the way mine is set on the engine now....the hoses are on the outside. where the lettering is...i will take pics of it.

That's weird. if it works in the driveway, why wouldn't it work in the lake? What hose did you take off to feed water to the motor?

I hooked up the garden hose to the hose from the pic up's that feeds into the pump....the difference i believe would be that the water from the garden hose is under pressure and forcing water into and through the water pump possibly??? i will find out in about 2 hours.

Possibly it works on the hose in the driveway which allows the hose pressure to push right past the impellor blades…

I probably should have come up with that when Paul called me the other night, but in my defense it was pretty late on Great Race Sunday, and I had a hard day of “racing” behind me.

People do with fords all the time, the pump is essentially reversible for both lh and rh operation just by flipping it .. didn't/dont know if it applies to chyslyers as well.

I do believe you can install the pump upside down just as easily on a Chrysler. It may have markings on it, which may help.

Paul, sounds like you have some hoses run differently than shown in the pictures? Snap a pic before you start messing with it so you know what youre starting with- and we'd like to learn from it as well!

Victory!
I wouldn’t be too hard on yourself, I can think of two or three other ccfan regulars who have made the exact same mistake this year.

Good deal Paul, glad to see you running. You're not the only one to have a little trouble with Chrysler plumbing this year! LOL

Boat looks great!
