    Posted: August-16-2013 at 6:41pm
My 77 Southwind with a 351 PCM with 4 barrel Holley is running too rich and fouling new plugs with black soot after 2 hours of putting around and bar hopping. I'm getting the carb rebuilt and want to make sure it has the correct size jets. Most of my running is putting around at 1000 RPM, what would be the correct jet size?

Thanks,

Sam

If you get your list number of your choke horn, you can call Holley Tech support, and they should be able to tell you.

Did this start all of a sudden?

Thinking your richness could also be a ruptured power valve or a good old fashioned float/needle/seat issue.

When I bought this Southwind it came with an automotive Holley and ran good, but I won't use a non-marine carb on a boat. I had a marine Holley that came off a Shamrock I used to own that did the same thing plus blew black smoke out the exhaust. I replaced the Shamrock carb with a Edlebrock, put a new power valve on the Holley, and put it on the shelf knowing some day I might need it.

My copy of the Holley performance catalogue shows the 4160 vacuum secondary #R80319-1 for the 351 Windsor has having a 122-65 primary main jet, a 125-25 power valve, 1-1/4"diameter primary venturi, 1-5/16" diameter secondary venturi, and 1-9/16" throttle bores.

From my experience, even with factory specs and tuned as good as I can tune, they tend to run rich from off idle to about 2800 RPM. Then they seem pretty good until the power valve opens up when they get overly rich again. This is not a major problem, just hard on fuel.

If you are fouling plugs then I suspect s carb tune up is in order.
