It looks like the US auto executives are finally getting their heads out of their ass.
The Jeep grand Cherokee currently is available in a diesel. The Chrysler 300 and Wrangler are going to be available with a diesel in the 2015 models. Nissan is supposed to be putting a Cummings in their Titan and I also just read that Toyota is looking at an 8 cylinder Cummings for the Tundra. This should make the rice burner lovers happy. Audi is now advertising a TDI diesel and BMW is now offering a diesel in the 2014 328d(I think it is) Why did it take them so long to pull their heads out of their ass and pursue the diesels? Is it they finally see that the lousy corn fuel isn’t the answer? |

Maybe they are afraid of GM's automotive diesel debacle of the late 70's early 80's

They dont really have too much of choice with the new CAFE standards that were passed. With few exceptions big corporations, and the people that work for them are generally risk adverse, unless required to change by an outside force they just keep doing the same thing they have always done. Nothing insidious about it, just the nature of the beast.

I'm with you Paul. Took them a wile to get the idea. I think it took way to long. Chrysler really was the only company trying the diesel thing before now. The earlier GC had the Mercedes diesel and the earlier Liberty had the junk Peugeot diesel. Chevy just released the Diesel Cruze and I'm sure it gets great MPG.
Diesel clearly is the winner in economy and power. I will probably try to save my pennies in hopes of picking up a half ton Ram diesel when I can find a used one a few years down the road. But like Joe said, if what your doing works and it's making you money why change? |

Interesting that Toyota is considering the Cummings engine to power the Tundra when they already own a diesel company (Hino Motors). Maybe they figure since the truck is built here in the USA that it's more cost effective to use an engine from the US as well. Or that the Cummings name would have more recognition here... idk. I was actually told by the service manager at the local Toyota dealership that they were going to produce a diesel Tundra that would have a Hino engine... this was about a year ago... but a quick Google search definitely points to the Cummings engine. Myself, I couldn't justify the extra cost of diesel... , I would be happy with a TRD supercharger to bolt onto my 5.7L (504HP and 550Lbs-Ft of torque and 0-60 in 4.9 secs.) |

$4500 for the supercharger not much of a savings over the diesel. But maybe you're right who would want stock... 385hp @ 2800 and 850'lb @ 1700 and better fuel economy. http://www.cumminsdieselspecs.com/67.html |
