I had a problem when starting my '56 Essaness Craft motor. Duel Carter carbs. Thought I flooded it as gas dripped out of stern-side carb. It started but ran sluggish. I then noticed liquid running under the carbs and the intake manifold(?), which are connected together. My question is, I see there are a couple of "plugs" on the intake manifold... Could one of those pop due to our cold temps lately and tons of moisture? So, what I saw was excess gas and water possibly? I haven't taken the unit off yet as had to get the last ski run in and winterize the Nautique, but I'm 'noodling' what happened as she has been running perfectly all summer.
Thanks for any help. ~Pete |

Pete,
Are the carb's side draft YH's? More info is sure needed!!! If they are the YH's, then they need to be rebuilt. Daytona Parts has the kits. I did mine a couple years ago on my 312 Y block. Be VERY VERY careful about setting the float levels because the carbs sit on different angles, the float levels are different!! |

Thanks.
Yes, YH's. I plan on spending some time with it today...trying to get carbs off etc... I'll take a pic or 2. It sounds like I need to do some reading on setting the floats! I've been running "corn free" gas all season so she's been running great, so literally went from running fine one week to this the next...while sitting! Thanks for the info on where to get the parts..I'll post more later today. Really appreciate the help. |

I hope the photo came through... OK, took the Carb's off... Key info missing from my previous post-see the whitish material near Gray Marine name plate? that was plumbers dope as I noticed the gasket had wiggled loose and thus was loosening the entire carb mount. Could that have been where water was coming from? Seems that's a cooling sleeve, not something gas passes through. I possibly compounded the problem by flooding motor when I initially tried to start it, but not sure. Perhaps, if I'm correct, the loose gasket was letting air into the system and that is why it was running rough? Also, remembered that it was unusually smoky coming out of the exhaust. Is it wise to try and put back together with fixed gasket before rebuilding carburetor? Or, does this definitely sound like a carb gone bad? Thanks for your help! ~Pete |

I would start by removing the cover, float assembly on top of the suspect carb. Carefully check the adjustment and look over the whole chamber. Take the needle out from the air/fuel adjuster and have a look also. Doesn't hurt to familurize yourself with the working parts. Thats a good start.

Copy that. Thanks JW.
I'll see what I can do. Guess I'll need to look at both carbs as I'm not sure which one was giving me trouble. The one towards the stern always spews out more fuel if flooded as it is lower than the bow-side carb. I still wonder if it is a carb issue at all and not possibly caused by the gasket popping out where you see the plumber's dope. BTW. I used the plumbers dope to try and get it from dock to the boat launch to pull it out. It worked for that. I've cleaned it off after removing the carbs.. |

Peter,
There should be no water at the intake manifold where the plumbers dope is. I feel the bottom line is you need to rebuild the YH's. Daytona Parts has a very nice needle and seat system avoiding the common problem of overfilling the carb bowls. Try them. |

There should be an air tight connection where the intake manifold parts connect Peter, Billy (BoatDR) has told me that you can get a piece of truck radiator hose for the job but I found a couple orings and sandwiched them in there along with a thin strip of tire tube and stainless clamp around the whole connection. This seems to be a reasonable backyard repair.
