My hull has developed small pinholes and blisters in the gell coat. I am wondering if this could have been caused from keeping it in the water over the summer. Does anyone have any ideas to this?

Yes!!!! BTW, more info on the year would be helpful since CC switched gel resin types to eliminate the problem with polyester. |

Since when can gelcoat be made from anything but poly resin? I know CC went to vinyl in '89 (AME4000) and vinyl/epoxy in '93 (AME5000) but I have never heard of any gelcoat formulation change. Ive seen plenty of "newer" boats with blisters- including some on our former '92 that only spent 1 summer in the water (lift kept after that). Read the fine print in the owners manual and it will tell you that bottom paint is technically recommended to prevent blistering on boats that are stored in the water. |

Some boats are affected more than others. I've seen old boats that have been moored all summer long for years without many blisters and I've seen newer boats that have developed a lot of them after having been moored for just a few summers. We have an '03 Malibu that's been moored all summer for the past 11 summers and it doesn't have any. A neighbor has a 1998 Malibu and it is loaded with them. Keeping plenty of wax on it and pulling it mid summer and waxing it I think helps.

The year is 99 and I was not aware of CC advising to paint the bottom. Not sure if I would want to go that route. Probably waxing bi-monthly would be the fix. Thank you, its nice to know that my boat is not the only one being affected.

Painting is the "official" endorsement on how to prevent blisters. That's not my recommendation, as I'd rather look at a few blisters than paint! I too, have seen inconsistent results from mooring in the water. Some boats are adversely affected, others aren't. Regular cleaning and waxing is a given- I don't think its a legitimate blister prevention method. If you don't want blisters, I'd suggest keeping it dry- lift or trailer.

Here is a paper that describes in depth the causes of boat hull blisters. It is necessarily a bit long. I enjoyed it and I developed a better understanding g of the problem after reading it. This research was done some years back but I believe it is still applicable. Hey, we can't boat so you can pass some time with this.
