1978 Correct Craft Ski Nautique
I was wondering what the proper way to lift this thing would be, I need to do a little work to the hull (there are some scrapes and scratches I want to take care of) and afterwards, I want to give it a fresh coat of gel coat. It only really needs to be in the air for the sanding/spraying/drying bit which will take me probably 2 days. Seeing as the engine and drivetrain is still all in there, is there a good way to do this without flipping it upside down? |

Even with good lift rings - one should not work under a suspended load. It needs jack stands or blocks.
Aaron - It is easy to pull the trailer out from under the boat. Just takes a floor jack & some concrete blocks (& carpet). Search for a how-to thread (there was one recently). By the way, where are you in Iowa? We have a small contingent but are spread out from Des Moines to Davenport. |

Yeah, that was my biggest concern was working under it while it's suspended. If an eye bolt were to break, pull out, or lifting point failed it would make for a poor day. Thank you. I'm out in Des Moines actually. |

I decided to pull the rudder out of my 95 Nautique after reading how much improved a properly greased rudder would be. I used my engine hoist to lift the rear of the boat with the lifting rings, this seemed to work just fine. I was trying to post a picture of the lift but I seem to be picture challenged.

Someone on here (hansenindustries) posted a cool Vimeo time-lapse of him lifting and then flipping his Nautique last year.

Kook - Where you working on this thing? I work in Adel but make it to DSM several times a week. Let me know and I can certainly come shed some light if you need another set of eyes. I'd love to see your boat. We ski down at the river during the week in the summer and live out on Lake Diamondhead.
As for the lift rings, I wouldn't be too concerned about them if they have a little rust. I've lifted plenty of boats and seen many lifted without any issues. Heck, this one's (Craigslist Ad) been hanging for most it's life.  |

Different kinds of rings can be a pain, though you generally want a straight pull from the rings.
Lifting brings the question of stringer integrity into the picture. Also and depending on the design, the hardware blow deck should get an inspection. Stern hardware can sometimes not be as tight as it could be. With vertical pull rings, it's easy (after checking h-ware), to lift a touch with the picker so you can move the hull supports/strands. That's a +1 on the stands as they can be moved for a bunch of reasons. |
