It's about time to install the pad for the bilge pump. So I need to buy one and get the dimensions of the base. Some better than others? What gallon per hour?
Thanks! Bill |

Really depends what you want the pump to do. Do you want to get out excess water or do you want to keep the boat off the bottom of the lake? My last boating experience was all saltwater in Florida. The guru on all things boating at the time was a surveyer on the east coat of Florida named Pascoe. He wrote a number of very honest boat reviews and boating articles based on his many years of surveying. Here is his take on bilge pump sizing.
http://marinesurvey.com/yacht/bilge_pumps.htm It may seem like a total overkill but it's what is really required in real life if something goes wrong. Chuck |

link doesnt work..
Im paranoid of losing the shaft (even with a safety collar) or rudder, so went for the rule automatic 1100gph. It will empty a bucket in seconds! |

Bill, This is a very important question. Even the biggest pump will not keep a boat off the bottom if you have a major issue. I had one incident where I had to beach my X55. This was before I put a new bottom on her. I through a prop blade and before I could stop it, the strut along with a chunk of the bottom went with it. I was able to tow it back home with the engine running to keep the battery charged with the pump running but had water well over the sole. |

I like the Attwood 500 gph pump with the enclosed mechanical float. I haven't used a pad, but have glued the base to the bottom of the bilge with 5200.

An external float switch also has its advantages; should you wish to get every last drop out below the float, or should the dash switch fail, you can simply reach down and pull up the float to activate the pump.

Graham, Considering the water you are on, I think you need one of the Rule 10000 GPH pumps!! |
