Some people leave the bolts a little loose until the gear is mounted then go in through the starter hole and tighten them up.
I have never had any trouble installing the gear so I just reef them down good when installing. Torque in a star pattern.
YMMV

I have an 82 SN and have to replace the ring gear. I have everything apart and I am cleaning everything up before I reinstall. I was wondering if I need an alignment tool of any sort or if I can just bolt everything back together and not worry about it.
