Hi all,
Started up the 86SN for the first time this year yesterday, she pretty much cranked right up, but wouldn't idle. Looked in the carb and gas was leaking out of the primary venturis like crazy! I had this same problem last year and I rebuilt the carb. This wasn't entirely successfull, it still flooded intermittently. I've decided to buy a rebuilt carb. Has anyone dealt with FlyingFishCarburetors.com? They seem to have very good prices and a good warrantee. Any feedback is appreciated! |

Fuel leaking from the venturis is a result of the needle and seat valve not sealing or perhaps being set too high. I would try fixing this before exchanging carburetors. When you store the boat for the winter are you using a fuel stabilizer? If not you should. This might prevent the same thing from happening next year.

I replaced the needle and seat twice! Also triple checked the float adjustment. Strange, but last year it would only leak out of one venturi. Anyway, I'm tired of messing with it. |

I had this problem with my old carb. Rebuilt it a number of times and still the problem after about two outings. Basically, the internal fuel pasages ahead of the needle valve had corrosion. Since rust never sleeps, it would corrode and send small bits down stream that would foul the needle seat. Lightly tapping the top of the needle seat adjustment screw would dislodge the crud and we could continue on our way, but it always reoccured. Replacing the carburetor was the ultimate fix.
You may have the same problem. keep that water/fuel seperator changed out regularly as once they become saturated, they let water through. |

Thanks David...I think you're right. I don't have a dip tank so I did the best I could to clean it out with choke cleaner and compressed air. Back in the 70's I worked as a mechanic and used to rebuild Quadrajets by the dozen with good success but never had much luck with Holleys. They seem very simple but must be very sensitive to any clogged passages. The new carb should arrive Friday, I'll post as to how well it works.

Got the rebuilt carb by UPS a couple of days ago. Looked real nice but...DOH! Wrong overflow tubes, straight rather than the J shaped ones for marine use. I called Flying Fish and they said I could either try to swap the tubes myself or send it back for them to do it. As I'm anxious to get on the water, I asked if they could ship the correct carb right away, but it turns out they have no more in stock. It looks like it'd be pretty hard to swap the tubes without damage so I'm going to let them do it. Oh well, it's been rainy here anyway so what another week or so stuck on land? The boat looks nice sitting there on the trailer anyway....sigh.

Rob, Those guys at Flying Fish have some good prices, just ordered a carb for the Cuddy. Hope it works out. There is always good information from this site

The replacement for the wrong carb they sent finally arrived last Thursday. So much for prompt service. Put it on and it fired right up on the trailer using my home made toilet plunger fake-lake. Be going down to the lake this evening to adjust the idle and stuff. I'll post about how that goes.

After adjusting the idle speed and mixture she runs like a champ. Between the rebuilt carb and having the prop reconditioned over the winter it's almost like having a new boat. The prop seemed to only have a couple of small dings when I took it off last fall so I wasn't sure how much of a difference having it redone would make, if any. It was a pleasant surprise how much vibration is gone. I definitely recommend Delta Propellors for reconditioning.
