Hey guys - I ran into a snag on my JetJon project.   The steering cable from the jetski is way too long. (I need one about 5 foot long)

I found one that I think will work, but it is not made from stainless steel.

Are steering cables from TFX (now SeastarSolutions) Stainless? I can't tell from their website.

I am thinking that none of them are stainless, that's why they bind up.

What do you guys think?

Chris,
That cable seems pretty high priced for a NOS ebay item?

Are you thinking the jetjon will sink? I wouldn't worry about the cable not being stainless. I'm sure there is a plastic liner of some type inside the outer jacket and the cable itself looks like it's plated. Yes, stainless would be better but not by much. Stainless needs to be dried out to keep it's protective oxide coating. If always wet, stainless rusts.

I would not worry either Chris, my 95 started binding last spring taking both hands to turn. I cut it open to see what was actually going on,turns out no rusting but the grease used to lube was totally dried out

Thanks Pete.

It turns out to be a never mind.

I took a break, had a beer & some chili, & thought of a solution.

I can barrel-roll the cable over the engine to take up the extra length.

I tried it just now & it looks like that will work, just will look funny. It will be under the dog house so who cares about that!   Staying with the original part is my preference anyway.

I'll upload some pictures of my status tomorrow.

The project is really fun because I have to be thinking 3 or 4 steps ahead all the time.

Hmmm, I don't know. If you're going out in the salt I'd give some good thought to the stainless. I have a Carolina Skiff that's our rough housing play boat which is usually in salt and no doubt the steering cable on the motor side gets splashed really well. Every time after use in the salt I have to coat the shaft with that high quality WD otherwise next weekend it's nearly seized up. The SS cable may not be any better but I'm amazed how easily the cable gets stiff.

Closest that will get to the salt is if Chris drops his margarita

Nevermind, I see the IA in your profile. Not sure which state is IA but I'm guessing it's more likely to see corn than salt
