    Posted: June-09-2015 at 12:08pm
I recently purchased a 1977 cc with a ford 351 PCM engine.   The previous owner had paid to have a new carburetor put on the engine. Unfortunately, they used an automobile carb rather than a marine carb. I want to get this fixed right away. Does anyone have a recommendation on good sources to buy a new marine carb from?   I have zero experience so I want to make sure I get it from a trusted company.      Thanks!

I'd go with a new quick fuel instead of a holley. Better and cheaper. Call Zach at n3 Boatworks.

Thanks.   Never really thought of an alternative carb manufacturer.    Do you have a quick fuel on your boat?

I don't... But if I were in the market that is the way i would go without a doubt. The aftermarket Holley style carbs (Barry Grant, quick fuel) are pretty impressive. The latter has very good reviews in general if you read up online. A few guys here are running QF's with great results. The fact that they're cheaper is a bonus.

You have to run a soft line but I have a USCG approved line available. I can order these carburetors but I have to sell them at a normal retail number without the ccf discount.. I get a small supplier discount but I am basically providing them to customers as a service rather than making profit.

thanks, Zach.    I'm trying to learn about these engines as I go so forgive me if this is a dumb question but why do I need to run a soft line for the QF carb?   The Holley has a hard line, right?

How much will the QF cost and how long would it take to ship out?

thanks for your time.

The fuel inlet is not the down angle forward 45 degree like the holley.

The QF carbs are actually on back order right now. I havent ordered any because I don't have enough buyers but if my local guy still wants one I can probably put an order together for you.

I had my carb rebuilt by Peter Biever. He did a great job and was really helpful getting it zeroed in. He is always buying holley 4160's and rebuilding them for sale. over 40 years experience with Holley carbs. He recently posted one for sale a week or so ago. Not sure what he charges for a new one though. I have an email if you don't use FB.

I know you said new, but I picked up a re-man Holly 600 cfm from National Carburetor a week or so back. Came engine tested, ready to run right out of the box.

I've got a QuickFuel marine carb on my 1994 351 high-output engine. Great carb. Some of the QuickFuel engineers are ex-Holley. I like to think of the QuickFuel carbs as the next generation of Holley.

Which model QF did you get ?     I spoke with someone there today and they recommended the M-600 for my engine (4400 RPM and 240 HP).    He said the M-650 would work too if I preferred the mechanical secondary double pump style.    Just curious if there was a benefit to the mechanical secondary on these boats vs. the vacuum.

The M-600 is a direct (almost) replacement for the Holley 4160 carb. If you were looking at the following Holley carbs, the M-600 should fit:

0-80319-1
0-80551
75009-4

The M-600 is set up a bit differently that the Holley configuration. The 4160s shown above don't have changeable jets in the secondary circuit. The M-600 does. The Holley 4160s don't have a sight window on the fuel bowls for easy adjustment of the float level. The M-600 does. Most of the Holleys come with a 2.5 power valve. The M-600 stock configuration is a 6.5 power valve. I wouldn't get the 650 CFM for your application. Some like the mechanical secondaries on the 650, but I like the vacuum secondaries as they are very low-tech user friendly. the M-600 is not a "double-pumper" and only has 2 idle adjustment screws, instead of 4 like on the 650 CFM. Your engine CFM requirements won't step-over the 600.

The M-600 costs a bit less, too. Better carb (IMO).

I have a Quick fuel marine on mine and it is awsome!! Go to the Quick Fuel Web Site and view. There are many dealers on EBAY that offer the marine version from Quickfuel and have them in stock as well. Most of the Quick fuel engineers came from holley and the metering plates are all machined and not cast parts. This results in a clean machined carb and very detailed. It is a very nice peice and cheaper than your Holley replacement carb.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.   After researching it and talking to a few people I decided to go with the Quick Fuel M-600. It should be here in a few days.   I'll do a follow up post once I get it installed and checked out.

I finally got the new carburetor installed.   The boat fired right up after sitting since the end of last summer.   I changed the oil/filter, trans fluid, and fuel filter today.   I'm taking it out to the lake tomorrow to do the final carb tune.    So far so good.   Just wanted to update anyone that was interested.

You'll like the QF carb.
