We are having a terrible time trying to get the main stringer to contact the hull and remain level. Any advice? How much gap is too much we are pretty much stuck.

Jon,
They can be tricky but getting them to < 1/8" isn't too hard. Hopefully you have a power hand planer. Due to the angle. and it changing fore to aft, you need to scribe a line on both sides. Set the top of the stringer to a reference marks you hopefully have from the old stringers and scribe. You will probably have to do this several times. Level? Level with what? I always run a board across the gunnel and measure down to the top. What are you using for stringer material? |

We have the boat level fore and aft. The stringers we pulled were so rotted they can serve no reference we do have a hand planer. If the stringer is touching in the back it won't touch in the front and vice versa we have tried bringing down the middle but it doesn't workout and we take a step back. Any other ideas? Maybe build the hull up?

Jon,
Level the top of the stringer. Find the largest gap to the hull. Scribe this dimension on both sides of the stringer. Plane to those lines and the stringer will fit. If you still have gaps or a "rocker".you aren't scribing properly. |

Jon,
I just googled "how to scribe" and there is plenty of info. Try taking a look and it may give you a better idea on the principle. Beyond scribing when I really need extremely tight fit such as a wood spray rail to a wood hull, I will tape carbon paper to the hull. Rubbing the new rail on the paper shows all the high spots. |
