This is my first summer up here on a lake in NH without a Correct Craft since 1995. That summer, I saw an ad for a '67 CC Skylark on the lake. I called, I went, I bought! I first used it in '96. That was 3 boats ago. Since my latest boat, a CC Wildcat is not ready this summer, I have spent almost 4 weeks up here on the lake without a cool boat. Just my Sunfish sailboat and an aluminum fishing boat with a 9.9 Evinrude as my only modes of water transportation. My dock looks so lonely without a CC tied up at it. And my mooring is used for my sailboat. Nothing looks better than a CC on the mooring!

Sad to say, progress in the boating world these days has gotten completely pathetic! The lake is over run by pontoon boats and wave runners. There are but a handful of cool classic boats anymore. One of my favorite things to do as a kid was to watch cool boats bomb around the lake. It's no good anymore. All the cool boats like CC, Century's, Glastrons, MFG's, to name the most common back in the day, have virtually disappeared. I guess I should be glad I had the chance to see all those boats back in the '70's during their heyday. Took all that for granted.

The thing about pontoons...well, they're completely ugly. They create a huge wake on the shoreline. They always have 15 people on them. They choke up the channels. People that drive them NEVER look around. They are basically driving their living room around. And they're driven by overweight, buzzed-head, tattooed, backwards-wearing baseball capped, tank-topped wearing men that are never friendly.

The I/O's of today all have that highly annoying drone sound to them. Back in the '70's, I/O's were grace on water. Very quiet and pleasant. Now, they drone around the lake pulling a tube and just grate on the nerves for hours. And I'm not a fan of the newer CC's. They don't even sound like inboards anymore!

Just wait till I get my '69 Wildcat on this lake, hopefully next summer!!

We rented a 22' pontoon for our vacation a few weeks ago.
A first for us but with 9 people it just made sense, the only other choice was a humdrum I/O at the same price that wouldn't hold us all, and we had access to a southwind anyway to fulfill our need for speed. So it was just for basic transportation, but gotta admit there is some validity to the floating living room concept; particularly with passengers ranging from age 1 to age 85.....

The Sunfish is one of the greatest boats ever created, eh? Forty years later ours finally met it's demise (waterlogged beyond further repair) so an hour with a Sawzall and cut it into pieces so small the garbage man took the pile away. ...pretty fun project.

I get it that for practicality reasons, the pontoon makes sense. And I never intend to offend anyone with my profiling of people that own or use a pontoon. I was just generalizing what I witness. And I thank you for your response sans any personal rebuttal defense to my observations of pontoon people. We all have the right to enjoy the lake.

Yes, the Sunfish has been truly money well spent! My Dad bought a 1976 one back in 1994. He did this due to the fact that our little fishing boat had finally met its last run on the lake after 20 years. And my parents hated to see me not out on the lake in something. I had been using my cousins little sailboat for a couple of summers and saw that I really liked it so Dad bought one for me to use. I wax the hull on day 2 of my vacation and have it ready to sail by the end of the day. I did have to replace the original sail about 5 years ago but otherwise, I keep it in great working order. I always have a great time on it!

My lake in Georgia is majority pontoon aND that's what they like. My Century gets a lot of attention, but they'll walk right by the Southwind like it's invisible. ....but if a new pontoon comes in they'll run to the dock like the Queen Mary itself just arrived. ..

And wouldn't you know it, today, my final day here at the lake, I saw the one and only 1967 CC Riviera roaring down the lake! It's a beauty...in wonderful condition with the turquoise hull and white interior. My brother spotted it and I ran into the camp to grab my binoculars just to watch it on the water. I see it usually only once each summer and each weekend I would hope to spot it. Seeing that beautiful boat amongst all the boxy aluminum behemoths putting around every where was a refreshing sight.

That boat was my, Queen Mary!

Oh that's okay Pete. I still had fun up there with my bro in laws aluminum fishing boat. I felt like a kid again buzzing around into coves and tight spots I couldn't do with a big inboard! I hope to get my Wildcat on the water next summer. I say this light-heartedly, man I wish I told Kondrat to remove that big ski pylon out of the Skylark when I put it up for sale! I am pulling my hair out trying to find one now for the Wildcat! And that pylon would've been perfect! Oh well!

I wanted to mention to you Skyfuzz my Dad was in the same situation you were once in. From 79 to 84 or 85. My Dad was using old fishing boat that went maybe 10mph. That's what my dad mentioned to me. It was better than nothing. While the other boat he had was in storage. During that time my Dad restored it when given the chance to be able to. Which was a 64 15' Carver which is a wooden boat, with an Evinrude 60hp motor. Such a classic boat and looked really nice. I miss that boat. It was a lot to maintain though. That was two boats ago that my Dad had that Carver.

Sounds nice! Thanks for posting your story. I spent every summer on my lake since birth. Loved boats and boating right away! My Dad, still alive and kickin at 92, I am 51...my dad never was a boater but I think my constant griping about not having a boat made him by an aluminum 14' Smoker Craft in '73 when I was 9. As long as I stayed close and along our shore, I could take it out, my parents told me. I even had to wear those old school orange life jackets with all the straps! I didn't care. Well, I used that boat every day each summer I was up on the lake until 1993 when it died on me, it had an original 1973 Mercury 7.5 hp. I ended up rowing home. I would come to own my first Correct Craft in '96. It was time for a big boy toy!

But our lake back in the early to mid '70's had alot of nice wooden boats. I personally wasn't a fan as far as ever owning one. I've always been a hard core fiberglass fan!

Bought our first treasure up in West Ossippi, NH about five years back. A nice little 1950 Correct Craft Utility. It comes along every year and nears completion. Enjoy your stay and watch for the bears!

My Dad has a huge impact on me when it came to boating. He still has a boat as well. a 18' Checkmate with an Evinrude 175hp. I have mine a 25' Baja. I'm selling the Baja and looking to get a Ski Nautique once I sell my boat.
Whenever I go out boating I would prefer to be the driver rather than the passenger.

Never remember seeing that boat on Ossipee. Reminds me of the time about 20 years ago when I spied this bright red '68 Freeport I/O at an auto mechanic garage. It was in town in Center Ossipee on a road I never usually travelled. Positive it was the one that was on the lake as early as I can remember and never saw again after the mid eighties. There it was, all neglected and faded and I think the Merc out drive was gone. Funny, I kept going back to this storage area next to this garage for a couple of years to visit it and I took some pictures of it for nostalgic reasons. And one day I happened to look over to the right and in a ditch in the thick of trees and bushes almost completely hidden was a 1960-ish wooden CC Atom Skier with an I/O, Suddenly it dawned on me that this boat, too, used to be on Ossipee for years. It was in sad shape and I wonder if it's still there. The Freeport is long gone. When I drive by that garage, I still wonder if that Atom Skier is still there becoming one with the ground.

Never saw any bears.
