Time to figure out why my bilge is constantly covered in transmission fluid:

Kevin's blog about removing my transmission

I have Art on speed dial to walk me through this! So far, so good, but I know that this was just the easy part.

Kevin,
I know you'll keep us informed as to the direction you head. When done, this will make a fantastic addition to the FAQ thread.

At Art's suggestion I rolled the transmission onto it's face to see if we could find out where the leak is coming from. I placed it face-down on a paper towel.

Here it is out of the boat before I placed it face-down:

And I let it sit overnight. Here's what I found. HOLY COW, does this thing leak!!!! The entire paper towel was soaked.

The front shaft seal was the suspect part - but that is not what soaked my towel.

Instead, the culprit appears to be the front body gasket. In particular, the fluid is flowing out the seam in the transmission mounting holes on the right side of the transmission (when viewed from the rear - as if looking at it in the boat).

So that is a bit tricky there though... was it leaking there before you removed if from the bellhousing when it was clamped there by the mounting bolt, if it was I suspect not nearly as badly.
Was it leaking in the boat from loose mounting bolts on that side. It looks like the front body is only held on by those bolts at the top and bottom, that would make that gasket surface pretty intolerant of over or under torqueing.

On the replacement I would be running aviation perma a gasket on both sides of the gasket and I wouldn't spin it up ( or probably even fill it up before bolting it up to the bell housing. And I would still be looking really hard at the seals as the source of the leak you had while it was in the boat.

Good questions and advice, Joe. The transmission has been leaking from that gasket from the day I got it. The reason I removed it from the boat is because I'm tired of cleaning up oily transmission fluid from my bilge.

The story of that transmission is a little murky. I purchased it off Craigslist from a local guy, so it is not the transmission that came with my motor. So, I just have no history on it. I don't know the hours, if it has been rebuilt before... nothing.

I now believe what was happening was that the warm fluid was leaking out those holes, down the seam in the transmission and then onto the bottom of my boat. That makes sense with regard to where I saw the drips and what I felt when trying to find the source of the leak(s).

Either way - I'll be replacing seals and that gasket. I won't be reusing old seals in this little project. Why else would I be going to all this trouble?

Once I crack open the case I can have a good look at that gasket. Could be it was installed wrong, or perhaps a kink or seam was accidentally created?

I'll let you all know what I find. Currently, I'm working - so it might be a few evenings of effort before I get to that spot in the transmission and have the time to report back. I have to drain the thing first...

Thankfully, the problem was very obvious. The gasket was not aligned properly and thus the fluid was just flowing out of the upper mounting hole pictured earlier. Will be an easy fix.

There was quite a bit of gunk on the magnet at the bottom of the transmission. Should I worry or look at anything else while it is apart?

The parts:

The problem:

Gunky magnet:

Should I worry about how the shaft looks?

Bad deal with the prior gasket install. Lots of work because of shoddy work huh? Does the shaft clean up where the seal rides?

Kevin,
I don't see anything in the pictures that looks bad but I don't see all the parts ether. The gunk on the magnet I will say is normal from wearing in contact points of components. I'd put it back together after cleaning it some more.

Nice job tackling this and know that it's no big deal at all. Working on these boats is like a day at the spa compared to working on equivalent car jobs!

Very true. At their core, these are really quite simple machines.

I think that the shaft will clean up fairly well. I'll be tackling that as I wait for the new seals and gasket to arrive from Skidim.

Here's a thread from 2007 when I replaced my front seal. Still leak-free.

Joel - That is very helpful. Thanks for sharing that with me. I'll be looking at that again when I put this back together again.

Update - transmission is back together and in the boat already. Art walked me through it and I got to talk with him on the phone a couple of times, which was awesome. I'm quite confident it will be leak-free. I was very pleased with the inside of the transmission. The disks looked good and no funny wear patterns anywhere. Hope to give it an on-the-water test soon.

So, this hasn't gone as smooth as I hoped. I got the transmission back together and into my boat. I filled it with fluid and dropped it in. Then the next weekend I went out to the boat to work on some other stuff...

What I found (not in this image) was a bilge with transmission fluid in it. I felt the bottom of the transmission and sure as shootin' the thing was leaking. So, out it came. I'm getting pretty good at doing so at this point.

Some patience and inspection revealed that the darn plug at the bottom was leaking. So, out came all the fluid and more research. You can't see it in this photo, but that 7mm allen plug was slowly leaking fluid. I could wipe it dry and come back 10 minutes later to find more fluid seeping through.

The solution I'm trying: Permatex High Temperature Threadseal.

I just applied it and cranked down the plug again. It takes 4 hours to set and 72 hours to fully cure. I will wait the prescribed time and then fill the transmission back up with fluid and report back on the results.

It's a down angle trans. LH engine with a RH prop. The gearing for the down angle changes rotation just like a VD or a reduction.

I had to open one of these transmissions that was leaking at the shaft seal in the pump cover. The transmission work itself is easier than getting everything out of the way so you can pull the transmission. Too bad Correct Craft did not have the hull hugger muffler back in 1989!!

Update: The thread seal is working like a champ. No leaks after two weeks of sitting full of transmission fluid. Yippie! On to my other winter projects.
