What weight oil??

New to Forum. I am restoring a Super Sabre V6 engine for a 1963 American Skier. What oil filter number and what weight oil does the motor use. Also where can I find new distributor cap,rotor for the motor? Thanks, Ken

Ken,
Welcome.
I'd suggest going to the auto supply (not Autozone ) and ask for a filter for a Buick 225 V6.

The oil called for originally was most likely straight 30. Now with all the benefits of multi weights, I suggest 20-50. However, the most important aspect of the oil is it needs the proper amount of ZDDP because of the flat tappets. Valvolene VR1 is a choice of many including myself.

I have a 1947 Chris Craft with Chrysler Ace motor same year that uses 30 weight non detergent will that work? But will ask question of my auto supply shop. Will post pics of 63 Skier once I figure out how!!

Ken,
Why are you running that oil in the Chrysler? Did someone tell you or are you just going by the owners manual? For the Chrysler, the same applies with my oil recommendation for the Super Sabre. (20-50) The transmission will run fine on the oil and the engine will benefit with the multi weight, the ZDDP and especially the detergent.

Those "gurus" don't know their oil!! They obviously don't know what detergent oils do and why they were developed. Detergent oils keep the sludge that a filter can't remove in suspension so the sludge is removed with oil changes! Filters remove some of the larger particles. Detergent is even more important with many of the old marine engines since many don't even have filters!!! Have you ever wondered why old engines needed to be rebuilt so often? The bottom line is a cleaner engine that doesn't need the frequent rebuilds. I suggest doing some research and NOT listening to that so called "guru" BTW, I've been an ACBS member since 1981 plus been around the old engines many years before that. A recent project was rebuilding a 1927 universal marine. Guess what's in it - DETERGENT oil!!

Is that what you're using? If so, you must live in the cold part of Florida to require the 10 base weight to crank your engine!!

Rotella he is referring is likely 15W40, not 10w40.

Is Rotella a safe option for a flat tappet??

I seem to remember that there was a post regarding the ZDDP levels of various oils. Using the VR1 20-50, I didn't really pay too much attention to the figures but some of the Rotella's were good.

I personally run driven racing oil, mainly for the additives for the flat tapet cam

Driven HR has ZDDP content of 1300 PPM same as Mobil 1 15w-50. Looks like good oil but pricey.   I buy a 5qt jug of M1 at Walmart for about $24.

I sure agree that the Driven Oil is sure up there in $$$!! Did you ever compare the ZDDP content with other more reasonably priced oils? I'm curious as to your selection with the Driven Oil.

Have any of you bought Valvoline vr1 lately? It's over 6 a qt too. Have not seen a sale in a long time. You can always tell when a product jumps in price dramatically, you get less . VR 1 now come 6 to a box, no more 12 to a case.

No, I haven't bought any recently. I still have several quarts left from the two cases (12/case) I bought two years ago. Not much boat time last year. The X55 and the Atom didn't even go in the water. The sale of the house and the move kept me busy! I'll have to keep my eyes open for a sale on the VR1..

Rural King has it the cheapest at 4.99 but there are none close. I get mine from NAPA, seems to be the same price everywhere else.

I went with driven oil because my buddies shop swears by by it. I wasn't aware that anyone else was making an oil for the older motors that did not require an additive. Driven is a super good company to deal with too!!!

Rotella 15/40 is correct.
        My engine builder said that is the only thing to run and i agree as i have used it on other boats and one vintage motorcycle.    

its all an epa thing.   Diesel oil has higher zinc so it isnt advertised for gas engines. Race oil also has higher zinc as does some motorcycle oil.   EPA doesnt want high zinc in car engines and with roller cams i guess it isnt needed as much.

Gary, same here, I used to buy VR1 20W50 when on sale at Autozone but haven't seen a sale in a long time and think they are even higher, like $7 or so.

Pete, sorry about Autozone but I had a friend that was a manager there plus their rewards program is actually pretty decent.

Ken, glad to see you posting here, try to get some pics of the Skier up so we can see it! You have the "correct" kind of boat, with the steering wheel on the port side.

A repeat of many threads on the subject....I use rotella but everyone has their preference. Question though...how often do you really change your oil that a few extra bucks to protect an old engine sways your decision?

No problem regarding the Autozone comment. You must have missed my post on my adventure to Autozone. Several years ago, I went in for a case of VR1. All they had wer individual Quarts so I asked the "associate" for the cardboard box to put them in and carry the 12 quarts over to the check out. He told me when they put the oil on the shelves they dispose of the cardboard box so, I made a couple trips over to the check out. He rung it up but I noticed he didn't give me the case price. Questioning him, he said "that's because you don't have the cardboard box"!!! Turned out he needed the bar code on the box to give me the case price! He ended up having to call his manager at his home to figure out how to enter/find the case price!
