I need to replace the starter on my '86 2001 and was wondering if anyone has used the newer style Permanent Magnet Starter. If so, have you noticed any improvement over the original style starter? I've read that the Permanent Magnet Starters generally produce more torque than the originals.

Also, does anyone reproduce the battery cables for this boat, or does everyone juts have them made up?

Any help is greatly appreciated..

I'd suggest having them made or make them yourself. By making them up, you will end up with better cables by using a heavier gauge and tinned marine rated cable. If you go OEM, you will end up with the same at minimum gauge cable and most likely non tinned.

i changed to reduction gear starter and got some 00 cables that a friend had from his diesels.   its overkill but nice cables and the ends are crimped and glue shrink wrapped so they are completely sealed.

Recommended that you get cables made up for proper length etc.

Appreciate the info guys. I found some info from a member on this site who replaced the cables on his '89 2001 with 0 gauge cables, so I'll probably go that route. This member posted the lengths of the positive and negative cables as 8' and 6' respectively. Does anyone know the length of the cable from the solenoid to the starter?

Unfortunately, the boat is in another state, so I'm unable to measure the cables currently installed.
