I have posted in a few forums here on a related topic. I replaced my power valve and put all new gaskets on the primary and secondary... go to fire it up, and it will not start. If I hold the throttle wide open, she will pop and start, but just rev up... sounds like it is just suckin a ton of air in.
Any tips on getting it steady again.. or I am just spinning my wheels. 92' nautique PCM 351 ProTec Electronic ignition |

take it and have it re-built by someone knowledgeable instead of buying a new one which is just a waiste of money when you already have a carb that can be re-built

I just found out from the original owner that it has never been rebuilt... so this would be the first rebuilt.
So my dilema is: Rebuilt carb locally here is $289.00, tested on a 351,etc. New 4160 $449. sell my old one for $150? Then just have a brand new one. I checked out fish.... not bad on prices.. don't like the black that much.. but oh well. I probably did miss something, but I have a feeling I will get it fixed, then 2 weeks later something else goes wrong with it and i'm out another weekend or two fixing that problem. Any input? thanks fellas! |

If you get it rebuilt by a qualified shop it will be as good as new.
You asked for more input: Get it rebuilt. In fact, if it was me, I'd be sure to get the carb rebuilt and not exchange it for a rebuilt - keep the original. I think you will have fewer problems by hanging on to the original. |

289.00 a bit high concidering he's only got 50 bucks in kit, and about 1 hour in labor time not including the soak time, which doesn't invaul any labor.

So I went with the rebuild.. They are taking my carb and pulling it apart. They did find a bad accelerator pump which was the first cause of my backfire out of the hole, which then probably took out my powervalve. I did happen to replace my powervalve and put it all back together... but then I had the problem above. Apparently, it is possible to get a bad powervalve from Holley out of the box... it's not uncommon from what I was told.
Anyways.. I'm hoping for that "new" feeling this weekend when I get it back together. cheers. |
