Should I install a fuel/water seperator?

Hi guys,

Now that my boat's running like champ, and as I recover from hernia surgery... I thought I'd focus my attention on prevent*tive maintenence.

I can't seem to find a fuel/water seperator on my set-up. It does have what seems to be a filter of some sort...



Anyone familiar with this type of filter? Would it be in my best interest to add a fuel/water seperator? Thanks for any feedback.

I doubt it is a seperator, it looks like just an inline fuel filter

I would install one. I know I got some bad gas and have run water out of mine a couple of times. My seperator is between the tank and the pump. I would assume that you have an inline filter in that picture.

Get a seperator, you'll be glad you did. And get rid of that fram oil filter, put a FL-1A on that thing.

I 2nd Tim D on the separator and the Fram oil filter. If he wouldn't have said it I would have.

I installed the canister type fuel filter/water separator that SkiDIM sells, it was easy to mount and works great.

If you question our judgement on Fram filters check out Oil Filter Study . It's not a comprehensive study on oil filtration but it is a pretty good observation of build quality, construction, etc. I'll never let a Fram filter touch one of my engines.

The Fram Filter will be gone as soon as I can change my oil. Thanks for the tip. I'm also going to order the seperator from skidim. Thanks.

Should I scrap that inline filter or leave it?

It is probably not needed but won't hurt anything. Take it or leave it. I persnally would just leave it

I have an inline about the same place you do, but it's one of those glass-see-through types. You can take it apart and change the filter. Nothing gets to it, I just like so I know there's fuel flowing.

Thanks to Tim D. for the tip on filters and direction to the study. I had on the same Fram filter as joed and changed it this season to a Quaker State. Sound like neither are any good. What brand is that FL-1A you mentioned?

I wonder if the filter can affect oil pressure. In my '91 Nautique, the gauge is reading steady at 80 kp.

the filter will not effect the pressure. Remove the teflon tape around the sending unit if you have some on the threads your loosing the ground because of the tape.

Thanks 79, By sending unit, are you saying it has more to do with the gauge? Is 80 kp possible and/or is it a problem do you think?

I am familiar with my engine by the way, but obviously not a mechanic as you might tell.

What he is saying is that if someone installed the sending unit with teflon tape on the threads, that the unit may not be grounding properly and may be giving you a false reading at the gauge.

And the FL-1A is a "motorcraft" brand filter.
