Hello, I'm working on patching the holes from an old tower I removed from my boat. I need to start by filling the lower part of the holes where the fiberglass Is, and then I will finish off with the gelcoat repair kit - sand, wet sand, and buff etc. I'm wondering what is the best resin to use for the initial fill that will bond to the old fiberglass on the bottom side of the holes. Is the standard Bondo branded resin that I can get at any big box store adequate for this? The area will likely see new tower feet in the future so I want to ensure that there's some bonding going on. Thanks!

I would use epoxy resin, whatever brand you want.

Would a standard squeeze tube of two-part Epoxy work just the same? There's not much to do, so I could get by with a small volume.

Those are hard to mix properly, I wouldn't use that on this job. You can get small quantities of good resin online or at a marine store.

I've had good luck with the West System stuff (epoxy 105 resin, 205 fast hardener, thickening agent).
Recommend you add a fiberglass layer behind the holes (underneath) before filling- for extra strength. |
