After 9 years, I quit being on facebook. 3 weeks ago I cut the line. Not one of my fb friends has even bothered to say anything. I wasn't one of those oversharing fb people. Just a random post every now and then. Maybe a photo or a youtube video thingy to share. And mostly a few friends would even comment or like.
Well, except for Ed. Ed is a guy I know through work. My private nickname for him is, er was, 'the troll.' This is a guy who is a nice guy, early 60's. From Boston, like myself. So there was that interest in common. Ed likes to post about half dozen things on fb daily. The usual crap, a meme, a news story etc. I never would 'like' or comment on his posts. Honestly, I lost my love of being a part of social media years ago and was reduced to just a scroller the last few. I got seriously tired of Ed's junk on fb several times a day. Once in a blue moon, I would finally post something on fb. Ed was always the first person to 'like' my post. Always. Or comment on it. Or share it. Like he was sitting there. Just waiting for me to post something. Other friends even asked who is this Ed guy?? Sometimes Ed would be that guy. The guy who disses something cool I put on fb. Maybe a youtube video of a song I love. Ed would write: ZZZZZZ Borinnnnngggg! Yah, thanks Ed. Ed was that older person on fb that ruins it. But usually my posts. His wife even started in on me a while back. I see Ed often at work. We play Words with friends too. Ed has said nothing to me about being gone from fb. Yes, it is honestly a bit depressing that no one seems to care that I am gone. Although a lot of the 181 former fb friends were old school friends that have no way of contacting me anyways so who knows if they're out there going, "hey, where's Bob?" None of my family was ever on fb. Can't explain that. None of my close friends were ever on fb either. Again, unexplainable. So basically, most of my fb friends were people I work with or worked with. Gonna give a prize to the first one that says something! And a hug. How has it been for me since I quit? I honestly still think about posting something each day...and then I remember. No need. I am more productive at home and at work since I quit. I am now basically media-less. I don't watch news. I don't read the paper. I have he BBC and CNN apps on my devices but never check them. Important things have been happening in the world, famous people have died and I am finding them out days later if I'm lucky. By then, it seems the rest of the world has forgotten the event and is on to bigger and better within minutes. Bottom line. Facebook turned into a beast. An energy sponge. A time sponge. So glad I am no longer subjected to that social media monster. |

Facebook is social media - social media's goal to have people care what you do. If you need to be stroked through social media, change your name to Kardashian. If you want friends (who will be there for your widow or to help with sick kids) interact with people directly and don't put ANY personal value on social media.
Woody is being supported here because we have directly interacted with him and we are happy to help in his time of need- NOT because he is a social media rock star. "Successful" social media is based on Outrage or Outrageous. If that's what you want, live like a Kardashian. I am on FB but I have been "done" with it since the first post of someone's delicious latte years and years ago. Come to a CCFan Mini Reunion interact with REAL friends and forget about FB. |

Sounds like you got off facebook just in time. When you start relying on facebook to assess your own value and self worth, its time to get off. When your life revolves around how many likes you get or how many people like, copy paste, share your stuff, its time to get off. When you are deeply saddened that you only got 3 likes instead of 1 from every one of your 8,000 friends, its time to get off. When you feel you are committing too much time to it, its time to get off. I saw a post on there recently from some college girl, explaining she was leaving it for a while. Had to concentrate on studies and life and other such things. Which is fine, she doesnt need to be on facebook. But at the same time, hey missy, how about practicing a little restraint, you dont have to be on it 4 hours a day, how about 10 minutes, or 10 minutes every 3 days, just to check in on what your friends are up to. Of course, facebook pretty much isnt checking in on what your friends are up to anymore. Unfortunately it has become a forum to use to spend 8 hours a day combing the internet to find worthless crap to post to delight all your friends who are apparently incapable of combing the internet to find wildly amusing or exciting or interesting crap. Yeah, I admit it, I am on facebook. Probably shouldnt be, but I go there to see whats up, just like I go to yahoo news (the epitome of worthless/fake news sites) or Drudge Report. I have blocked a majority of my friends because I got tired of seeing all the worthless crap they post, from the aforementioned crap off the internet, to politics and the yummy mac and cheese they had for lunch. Those folks, like Robert's friend Ed, clearly have no lives and nothing better to do. There are a bunch of CCF guys on there and it is a little different level of sharing than on here. Plus there are other pages I enjoy like 50s boats and outboards, vintage boats for sale, vintage water ski photos, local classifieds. I wouldnt be too saddened by nobody running up to you after 3 weeks and asking where have you been, please come back. No offense, but that seems a little odd for a 53 year old man to think that way, 13 year old girl, maybe. But those 8,000 "friends", they arent looking out for that or you. Same as on here. We have folks that post multiple times a day or multiple times per week. Yet sometimes they disappear for days or weeks. You dont see people getting on here then and screaming, Oh my God, what happened to Pete? I'm worried about him. I hope he is OK. And then low and behold, Pete is back, and lets us know he was on vacation, or working on the house, or whatever. Everyone and everything will be A-OK. So, it is probably just as well you are off facebook. Despite my participation there, I concur that it is pretty worthless. Go hang with your family, go for a walk, go skiing, go get ice cream, lay in a hammock and stare at the clouds....all desirable alternatives.
Edit: HA - Steve posted while I was typing my extended rant. He is on the same page as me it appears, just a little more succinct. |

I quite FB years ago. Man it is trouble in so many ways. I do however have a FB account, but I have no friends. I'll post a few pics on there mainly for free storage because I lose a phone every other week. Sometimes I'll use it to Direct somebody to a certain picture etc. I do use FB almost daily to follow up with manufacturers of boats and the entire waterskiing world in general. I follow a few pro skiers. Follow a few local things but still no friends. FB, YouTube and the radio is where I get all my media, I haven't even turned a tv on in over 3 years! And by having the account if a long lost friend is truly a friend they can find me and we can go from there.
My sister is every example already stated of how FB is bad. She gets stroked by all the likes she gets and the "oh so cool" and "wows" and sadly mostly from former students. |

Take it from someone who works with high school age students every day, social media hurts way more then it helps. Props to you for getting rid of that mess!

It felt good to get this rant off my chest. Thanks to all who shared comments. The best take-away from unFacebooking myself: My 'to do' list around the house, for instance has certainly gotten smaller!

I like when people who damn well know the names of social media purposely mix them up to try to fool you thinking they don't know.
